Generally they are classified by a letter of the alphabet. They are known as hepatitis A, B, C, D, and E. Some literature describe viruses that may be linked to hepatitis, but have not been proven to reside in the liver, are given the letters F and G. Each type of hepatitis is caused by different viruses and the disease it causes varies. Some are chronic, like B and C and others cause acute hepatitis that eventually goes away.
