When you start breeding a dog, you should wait till she is two years of age. That is when she is mature enough to handle a pregnancy. I know that sounds like a long time to wait, but it is worth it for the mother. If you are willing to pay for it, a veterinarian can tell you when your dog is ready. When she goes into heat, there are 3 cycles, proestrus(not ready for mating), estrous(ready for mating), and metestrus(can no longer mate). The pro estrous stage lasts about 4-9 days, and she will bleed. The estrous stage starts at about day 9, and the discharge will turn to a yellowish color. A vet will do a swab of her vulva and look at it under a micrscope to determine if the cells are cornified(estrus), and she is ready to mate. If you don't want to pay for that test(and I don't think it is expensive), then she would be ready at about 9 days after the start of her heat cycle. I know you only want to have 1-2 pups, but she may have more. Then you should make sure that you find homes for the rest of the pups which will be ready to leave mom at 7-8 weeks of age. They should be only on the moms milk for the first 4 weeks, then slowly be weaned to the milk plus mushy puppy food with chicken gerber baby food mixed in, then less of the moms milk until they are eating dry puppy food at about 6-7 weeks of age. The mom should be put on puppy food the minute you know she is pregnant. You will start seeing her show at about 35-40 days after conception, and then the pups will be born at about 63-68 days. After that you should really get her spayed to prevent her from getting mammary cancer as she ages. Once she has had a litter, her chances of getting that, or a pyometra(infected uterus) are greatly increased.

Just make sure that whatever decision you come to, that you must be responsible to not only the mother, but the pups as well. It would be better all around to get her spayed since there are so many unwanted dogs out there already. Talk to your veterinarian to make some responsible decisions for your pet.
Good luck to you!

Why are you wanting to breed your dog? Is she an exceptional specimen
of her breed, conforming closely to the breed standard? Has she any hard to
find virtues that would be a critical addition to the breed? Has she been
tested for genetic problems that can be passed on from the parents and does
she have an exceptional temperament? Has she been shown, and at least is on
her way to being a champion, if not already one?

If you want to bred and do it ethically, you must be committed to
learning all about your breed..its standard, its genetic diseases, the good,
the bad and the ugly. You must understand that your female could die. You
might have nothing but dead puppy bodies whether she lives or not. You might
have to pay for an emergency c-section to save her and/or the pups. If you
lose her, you are responsible for all the feeding of the pups, which will
require you to feed them every 1.5 to 2 hours. ALL hours, not just the
daylight ones. The puppies will poop 24/7, and this becomes your
responsibility to clean whether the mother survives to raise them or not.
The pups still need to be vet checked, vaccinated and dewormed no matter
what. When they reach certain stages of their lives, they need proper
socialization and guidance. They will be your responsibility at least for 8
weeks. After that 8 weeks, you are responsible to make sure they never wind
up homeless in a shelter or rescue. To ensure that, you will have to do
homechecks and make up contracts to be certain the new owners are going to
take care of them for life. You have to agree to always be available to take
back your puppies no matter what.

If you want to be a responsible breeder, look up your local breed
club, jump in and educate yourself. Listen to the advice of REPUTABLE
breeders and learn all you can about your dog. If you just wanna make
puppies to sell for lotsa money, don't bother. We have too many of those
already.

if you have to ask on the internet, you shouldn't be breeding her. you better hope she doesn't need a c-section or have a litter with a cleft palet puppy or even herpes. if she does, you'll be asking what to do on the internet. have you had her eye and heart certs done and elbows and hips if she is a larger breed? Are you simply breeding because you think she is cute and it would be fun? Dogs don't need to make babies and their owners certainly shouldn't breed their pups for any other reason othern than to breed healthy lines and not for profit. You don't even know when to breed her for godsake. Find another hobby or obsession that doesn't revolve around bringing more animals in this world.

Interesting..............even humans do those things! Why honey do you want to breed your friend? You can go to a pet store and play with puppies that others breed and only breed for the money!! They are poor quality just to begin with because so many of them are taken away from their mothers at a TOO YOUNG age! ......B U T, you at least can go an play with them at the store if you are that despirate...........they really need the love and attention that they don't really get behind glass, and some are alone and bored..........SAD SAD SAD. Would you at least rethink what might seem to make YOU happy, but overall is not a good thing. Please consider going to PLAY with puppies at the store or a shelter somewhere, and make an abused or sad and depressed dog happier (if it's possible). PLUS, there are big things that you MUST have checked before breeding..................HIPS< HEART

Here, go to this website and on the left hand side is a navigation bar. It has information about the heat cycle, mating, the stud, etc. (You have to scroll down to see the navigation bar)

Read all of the links. This will give you valuable information on breeding. And you may decide that it is not what you really want to put your dog through.

It is 3 weeks after the bleeding STOPS! If you do it before then she would become pregnant and that would be highly irresponsible.
Get her spayed.

No one knows. We are all as dumb about it as you are. Breeding is like a day in the park, Who cares how its done. Just pump out those puppies. The shelters are running low. They need more unwanted puppies to kill. It's people like you with no clue what you are doing that supply the shelters with dogs to kill.

Please visit the above website on the "just one litter" theory.

I urge you to have your female spayed. Not only for your dog's health, but for the sake of so many dogs on death row now.

You need to get your dog spayed because you obviously have no right to even think about breeding.

I agree with "Freedom" above- nicely said.

Get her spayed

Take a look at your local shelters, to see all the dogs out there, already waiting for homes. Dont add to the problem, PLEASE! If you are asking, you arent a breeder, so you have no business breeding her!
