to take care of my elderly mother. Does anyone know how I can apply for visa for the caregiver and which visa category they would fall under? The caregiver is not formally educated beyond high school but she speaks the native language that we speak and has taken care of the elderly in India. She is not a registered nurse.

Thanks for any advice you can provide.

Check with Immigration.

You will need to line up two care giver each will have 6 months permit as visitor, care giver.

Language barrier is a good cause for this arrangement.

See a lawyer listed in India Broad.

You could probably get a registered nurse from the Philippines but how long they would stay with a visa is another story. There are a lot of home health agency workers in America that could use the work and a live in or around the clock care can be arranged.

It would make better sense to hire someone on contract from the US rather that take a person from India for whom you will be solely responsible.
Imagine a situation where you are not satisfied with her.
You do get Indian caretakers on contract in the US so language shouldn't be an issue really.

Before you do anything I would contact a lawyer that handles visas, that would be the smart thing to do.
