todo las peliculas historicas is this thought of as singular or plural? can somebody explain the use of todo to me i know it means total or all but is todo considered singular plural or does it depend on what it talks about like todo las personas all the people... is what im saying confusing? all im asking is whether todo is singular or plural and how to use it please help thanks

"gustan".. it's plural because "películas" is a plural word.

"todo" has nothing to do with it, it's part of the expression "sobre todo" that means "above ALL".

My father likes, above all, historical movies.

So, what he likes is the movies, not the 'all'.. right?

EDIT: I'm sorry to say that what some of the others answered is incorrect.

As I explained, "todo" in this sentence is part of the expression "sobre todo", that's used the same way "above all" is used in English.

Your sentence should be:
Mi padre le gusta todo sobre las peliculas historicas.
peliculas historicas is the plural for what he likes which is historical movies. But the person seeing these historical movies is only your father as you mention and not anyone else, so you use le gusta because you are talking of him alone, one person. If it were your mother and father then your sentence would be as follows:
A mis padres les gusta las peliculas historicas.
You use les which means them and the word gusta stays the same. This is because your are talking about them to someone else and you are not asking them both if they like the historical movies which would then be?
A ustedes les gustan las peliculas historicas?

Hope this helped out,

I think that you could have either
A mi padre le gusta todo sobre las peliculas historicas.
or
A mi padre le gustan todas las peliculas historicas.

In the first case todo is a pronoun, whilst in the second case, todo is adjective - it should agree with the noun.

PS short stuff is wrong - you father is the object - gustar literally means to please, not to like
