That specifically update families about certain deployed units? Since my hunny is over there, it would be nice to get updates from another source. He can't always contact me, so...Does anyone know anything good sites?

Do they update info on the deployed units? Does anyone have any experience or insight into this?

It's just that, some other Military spouses and family members actually find update pictures from sites.

It would be nice if I could find a site like that for my guy's unit...

Is it just not common?

Hokie For Life had good ideas. There is another website called Marine Parents (http://www.marineparents.com/units/search2.asp ) but they have special sections for wives, girlfriends, fiancees, etc. You can meet people with loved ones in the same unit as your husband. Just search for his unit and you'll find tons of information and connections with other people in the forums. The information will also have a phone number with a recorded message with updates of the unit.

Thank your loved one for his service and thank you for supporting him!

You can always check his units page, just go to www.usmc.mil and select Units at the top and find your Marines unit and that will take you to that specific page. If you are married they have Key Volunteers who call and e-mail updates about flight windows and other info. Since you don't mention this, I'm guessing you two aren't married so this isn't open to you. The best bet is my first suggestion. This won't be too specific for safety reasons, but it will give you some idea of what your honey is doing.

Most Marine units have a deployed site that you can access through their regular site from www.usmc.mil.

I don't know about Marines but when my hubby deployed I went to http://www.military.com and entered in his information. I did find out some things like their progress and such, but you won't find out anything specific like missions. You should have an FRG (Family Readiness Group) for your husband's unit; they will be able to keep you updated as much as possible and informed. Also on military.com, you can find the FRG for your husbands unit. GOOD LUCK hun! We all appreciate him!

I don't know any sites for particular deployed units... you may want to actually talk to your husband's unit.

One of the sites that I like is: http://www.mnf-iraq.com/. It has really good information about what is going on over here.

Also, the newspaper that is available to us over here is Stars and Stripes and they have a pretty decent online site: http://www.estripes.com/

Hope these help. I find these are much more accurate as far as reporting what is actually going on here than stateside news sources. :)

most of that information is considered OPSEC and will not be printed on a publicly accessed website. Very few commands even allow such things on their official web pages.

ANY information you receive should ONLY be given to you via official sources.. the FRG/Rear Det and the Chain of Command. NO OTHER SOURCE.

Convoys have gotten ambushed because some idiot posted information on a my space page.

I know that would be awesome (my husband has been over there 6 times now) but offering that kind of information over the internet would put our military at risk.

Sorry, alot of that information is tactically sensitive so you're not likely to get it other than in the broadest sense. (He's in Iraq. or he's in Afghanistan). You might get something like the 8th is in Baghad, but that's about it.
