my first handgun. new or used, I don't care. I've heard good things about Ruger but am kind of partial to the 1911 frame. Thanks for your input.

If you like the 1911, you could go with the Springfield Armory GI .45 and sells for around $530. The Springfield MilSpec .45 is a step up, and is just about $600. Taurus is new to the 1911 market, and has one for about the same price as the Springer GI, but a little fancier.

For a more modern pistol, perhaps the Springfield Armory XD45--a 14-round polymer-framed pistol for about $550. Or a Smith & Wesson M&P 45--also polymer, 11-rounds, for about $500.

Yo can sometimes find deals on basic Kimber 1911 guns for around $600.00 (less if used). A good Springfield Armory is possible in your price range (avoid their entry models as they suck anymore). The Ruger P90 is a gun I used to have that I regret selling. It gave me 2" groups off the bench using 185gr LSWC reloads at 25yds. And the Ruger is even easier to take a part than a 1911, and that is really saying something.

For your first handgun, stick to a DA pistol (unless you're already familiar with the 1911 operation). You can do better than the Ruger. Go to your local range and rent a few different .45's to see how they fit and fire. I will second the XD-45 (5" barrel), as it's an excellent pistol. I love my Baby Eagle .45 cal. For a slightly beefier frame, check out the CZ-97B. The EAA Witness is another decent, inexpensive choice, and you can buy mod kits to change calibers (.22 LR, 9mm, .38 super, .40 S&W, 10mm, and .45) in the future.

Whatever you buy, make sure it fits your hand well, or your practical accuracy will suffer.

This probably won't help you but if you want an absolutely reliable pistol in .45 ACP get at glock 21, cause you ain't gonna get an absolutely reliable you can bet your life on 1911 frame pistol in that price range. You are gonna have to spend more for a 1911 serious duty gun, if it's for fun, go for the mil spec springfield armory.

I really enjoy shooting my 1911. It handles recoil very well, is reliable and accurate.

My carry choice is a Springfield-Armory XD .45 ACP Service (4" barrel). It also shoots well, is reliable and accurate. It also feeds everything I give it.

Both an entry level 1911 and any of the XD's should be in your price range. Other gunsI have shot and liked include everything Glock and Sig make. My large hands make some of the Sig models harder to shoot but they are fine weapons.

Check out the new Taurus PT1911. Auto Ordinance makes a nice 1911 in your price range, too. Rock Island Armory is another good source. STI Spartan is another possibility. Last but not least, don't forget the original--Colt.

You can find several hundred 1911s in your price range that you can buy on line at GunsAmerica.

If you want polymer - Springfield XD .45 ACP. They make a Tactical (5"), Service (4") and Compact (4" w/short grip).

If you like 1911's (all metal), Springfield, Rock Arms, probably a few others make decent entry level guns.

Go for the 1911 if that is what you want, the Springfield Armory pistols are the way to go in that price range.

Look into the Rock Island tactical 1911, it's a great pistol with all the bells and whistles already installed. Around 400 bucks and it could be yours.
