What kind of milk is best for a 3 year old- whole, 1%, 2%, skim?

Most nutritionists and WIC say that after 2 years, skim or 1% is the best because kids don't need all the fat. Keeping them on whole milk increases the chance for obesity. There are better fats for their brains than cow milk fat.

If the three year old doesn't like the wateriness of skim milk, add nonfat powdered milk to it. It boosts the calcium and makes the milk seem creamier. Be sure to chill it for several hours before serving it to him.

After age 2 whole milk is not needed for brain development. You need to look at your family history. Does your family tend to gain weight easily? Is your family underweight? If your family tends to be overweight skim or 1% is fine. If underweight stick with whole or 2%.

I think they recommend 2% at 3 years. But, whole would be fine too. I don't think skim or 1% would be necessary.

Stop buying Hershey bars. Offer only healthy food (fruits, juice, veggies, cereal, bread, etc.). Don't invest too much concern or interest in his eating so that by refusing he is not causing a reaction in you. Eliminate the power he has to create a reaction in you. Be authoritative "come to the table" but slightly disconnected emotionally "I hope you like this recipe". He will come around and eat because he is hungry instead of not eating because it gives him power to create a reaction in you. Hide or donate all other food that is not healthy. "This is your dinner and I hope you eat it, I am going to eat mine and enjoy it". You are in charge. An 'arrogant' two year old can be a very scary ten year old. Be the authority in the house and expect him to obey. You can't force a child to eat but he will eat when hungry and he will eat what is presented and available. This is most likely a behavioral issue, but keep doctors informed. Make sure he is 'eliminating' daily.

I have heard 2%. I am certain I even heard to put 1 year olds on 2% not Vitamin D. Maybe try the 2% then ask your peditrican next time you make a visit or call. The nurse in the office will be able to tell you! Good luck!

Whole milk unless it is not well tolerated. Kids need the milk fat for brain growth, so the more fat in the milk, the better. Don't give your kid skim unless the doc approves it.

Once they are 2, it doesn't matter, unless he is having weight gaining issues, he can drink whatever you do. My daugher usually drinks 2%, just cause that is what I have... Although she really likes the Soy Milk (Silk brand).

My Dr recommends keeping kids on whole at that age, because the fat content does factor into brain development, and doesn't cause any obesity/weight concerns at that young, active age, but my son hated it by that age, so we bumped him down to 1%. Now he likes it.
