im 17 and working trying to build credit for a car

You have to be 18 to legally sign contracts. You could be an authorized user but that won't help your credit score.

Instead of worrying about building credit for a car, worry about saving money and pay cash for that car.

Being a college student does not mean that you have no credit report. You should check with the credit bureaus. You can get free report from each of the three majors once per year. If you want your FICO score you will have to pay a small additional fee of about $5 per bureau. You may be surprised at what is already on your credit report. It would be good to get inthe habit of checking your credit reports every year now. Personal financial knowledge is a powerful tool, and should be possessed by every young adult.

If you are a college student, you can get a student credit card without a co-signer. You also do not need good credit to get approved. The easiest one to get is the citi platinum select card for college students.
