The seventh of the Ten Commandments, which God spoke long ago, "Thou shalt not commit adultery" Exodus 20:14. This has always been God's law. We are told in I John 3:4, that sin is the transgression of God's law, therefore, to commit adultery is to transgress God's law, and therefore, sin. Not only has God forbidden adultery, but the son of God himself said, "Whoso looketh on a woman to lust after her, hath committed adultery with her already in his heart" Matthew 5:28. If the adulterous thought is sin, surely the adulterous act is sin. The Holy Spirit through the inspired apostle has told us plainly that adultery is a sin. Peter described some sinners of his day as having "eyes full of adultery, that cannot cease from sin" II Peter 2:14. Paul warned the Corinthians to "flee fornication" I Corinthians 6:18.

Although God says "I hate divorce", adultery is so serious that Jesus says that it is legitimate grounds for divorce. Nevertheless, no sin is so serious that God cannot forgive it (except the sin against the Holy Spirit). Thus Jesus forgave the sins of the woman caught in adultery and saved her from those who wanted to stone her.
Also, whilst adultery is grounds for divorce, divorce is not mandatory in such cases. The Christian ideal is for the wronged party to forgive the adulterer, because marriage is a metaphor for the relaationship between God and his people, and God is always willing to forgive, though his people's adulteries hurt him greatly, see Hosea chapters 1-3.

Adultery is not just having sex with other that ones spouse, to look at another with lust in your eye is also considered adultery. All sin is punishable by death, and there is no one sin worse than another. The only saving a person for any sin is a sacrificial guilt offering. Jesus Christ gave himself as a guilt offering for all so that whosoever believe upon him shall not perish but have everlasting life.
No, the adulteress was not stoned to death in the Bible, because Jesus said "He who is without sin, caste the first stone." Everyone dropped their stones and walked away, Jesus said to the woman "Go, and sin no more."

It is no more serious than any other sin that hurts another human being as well as yourself.
But the key point is, the Christian teaching on adultery is:
"THOU SHALL NOT COMMIT ADULTERY."

Adultery and gay sex are only permitted for Fundamentalist preachers.
For everyone else it's a serious sin.

The Christian view of adultry is that it is a very serious offense. On a personal note, I would add that adultry can destroy two people and possibly their children as well.
Adultry is a moments weakness for physical pleasure that will do harm to both the adulterer and his or her spouse, children, and life!
One has to be wise enough to ask themselves, "Is it worth it?" ... Blessings!
