Perhaps you are refering to Spltboards?

Splitboards are snowboards that are cut in half straight down the middle length of the board. They have a telemark/snowshoe style binding or binding point on each half. They also have a standard center-line binding set one clips their boots into. The two halfs of the board snap together to form a regular board and then detatch so one can use them like snowshoes/XC skis.

They are intended for backcountry use only so a snowboarder doesn't have to carry snowshoes as well as a board. Personally, I've never seen one in action. The few Splitboards I've actually seen didn't really impress me. You can't use them for hard landings. If you take air, you better have a boatload of pow when you land.

In the split-mode, one needs to attach climbing sking to the base, much like a Telemark or AT skier uses.

I think you are talking about mono boards. Mono boards are like a snowboards with ski bindings parallel to the board. Mono boarding has a culture that is seperate from skiing and snowboarding.
