by using gear reduction, could a generator recharge electric car batteries?

yes, they used generaters long before alternators. but to completely power a car? there's a weight/power produced ratio that has to be looked at. the heavier the car, the bigger the generater and the more batteries needed. the bigger the generater and the number/size of the batteries, the more weight on the car. it's incredibly inefficient. that's why they're looking at fuel cells, solar, hydrogen as alternatives. also, what's going to power the generater? it cannot produce enough power to charge batteries, run the car and power itself.

I have seen standard on-board diesel-fueled AC generators used to drive special purpose inspection trucks by sending power to slow speed motors on the drive wheels. It is the easiest way to get the trucks to move slowly enough to do thorough X-ray scans to check for smuggling.
