You have to know how she'd react. If it would make her laugh, do it.

For my mom's 50th, she supervised several after school daycare sites, about 300 kids total. The staff told all the kids to wear black that day. They did the whole deal with the black balloons, chocolate cake. Mom was squeamish about turning 50, but it was such a big gesture, and she got so much attention, that she loved it.

This wouldn't work for everyone. Perhaps she would prefer a bouquet of flowers and a nice dinner out. You know her best.

Give your mom a gift certificate so that you and maybe other female siblings can go to a day spa and have some special treatment. Take the hour or two (whatever can be afforded) at the spa and then have other arrangement's made to have a party at her home (or one of your homes) to celebrate how special she is to her family and friends.
If your mom is down on turning 50, I think your idea may not bring a laugh to her--especially if the entire neighborhood, UPS/FedEx driver, mailman or the many strangers that drive on that street will know. They may be the only ones who find humor in this.

If she is not looking forward to it, Iwould not do the bra thing. Instead make a photo album of her in her youth (she was a product of the 70's like me) Maybe make her CD with songs from that era. Either way turning 50 is shocking to us all. We feel young and still remember our youth, but 50 is just a number.

I turned 50 last year. it was a turning point for me, because I already have 6 grandchildren. I would suggest doing something that makes her feel very sexy, and very not 50.
Take her out somewhere. I don't know what she likes, but some dancing and dinner always works. Take her somplace she has always wanted to go- someplace out of the ordinary.
