yes i thought someone 'smart' would say that. is there anything about their manner, the way they talk, something they might wear which would give you an indication?

Jesuits tend to be very public about their affiliation
If a guy has "SJ" after his name,he's a Jesuit.

All I can say is that, once you have experience, you can generally tell a "Jesuitical" style of argument. It's hard to describe, but I know it when I see it. Unfortunately, it's also common to people educated by Jesuits, so it isn't a clincher.

However, Jesuits do tend to be quite humorless about the claimed authority of the Pope of Rome.

I generally ask him: "Hey, are you S.J.?"

Or, I can generally tell from his cassock...it's more of a "double-breasted" cut with a cincture that hangs down and to the right side, as opposed to the standard issue one that has buttons down the front.
