OK, so I've had some suggestions. People always tell me to wear layers. What do they mean by layers? I thought it was one thing but then i read over the internet and people were mentioning jerseys and stuff like that. How can you layer with jerseys under a jacket. In my mind I've set up this idea of wearing an undervest (strappy type), a short sleeved t-shirt, a thin 3/4 or long shirt, a thin cardigan, and a jacket. Is that enough?

Wearing layers means that depending upon the temperature, you can add an extra layer or two to be warm enough.

Make sure you have proper rain gear.

Use my packing list as a guideline: http://www.thetravelzine.com/friend.htm

Have a great trip!

You need to dress warmly just like winter in the midwest or northeastern US. Layers-- a shirt, then a sweater, then a winter coat (and scarf). A knit cap can help keep you warm. If you can afford it, buy some nice woollens from the UK (sweaters, wool or cashmere scarves, etc.). If you have long underwear, pack that, too.

LOL its not THAT cold here between September and December! You are thinking along the right lines - but a strappy top, jumper and coat is usually enough in December, unless we get a really cold snap. For September - today I wore a tee shirt and 3/4 trousers and I wasn't cold.

all depends what part of the U.S. you go to . If you go to south texas, all you need is a tee shirt. If you go to pennsylvania I'd use a tee shirt, a long sleeved wool shirt, a heavy jacket and hood, and gloves, and a scarf. It all depends how your body reacts to heat and cold

Consider shopping there - and ask the locals what they recommend. Also, look on weather.com for average temperatures during those months.
