I asked this question the other day and pointed out a couple verses stating all have sinned. The overwhelming answer I got from Catholics was Mary had to be sinless so Jesus could be sinless. God created Mary sinless because otherwise Jesus would have original sin.

This does not make sense to me if God could make Mary sinless from birth why couldn't He have just done that for Jesus instead? If Mary had to be sinless so Jesus could be sinless then wouldn't Mary's parents have to be sinless? Otherwise she would have original sin. When you think about it this would mean Mary's entire line would have to be sinless else no one in it could be born without original sin. Which since all are descendants of Noah means Noah had to have no sin and thus no one has sin.

Can you see the fallacy in this thinking? I ask you Catholics to show me the error in this logic. If Mary had to be sinless so Jesus could be. Then Mary's parents had to be sinless too. Right?

Romans 3:23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;

1John 1:10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.

DougLawrence - I know Jesus was not a sinner. I know Mary was. You say Jesus could not have been sinless if the source of His human flesh had been stained by sin at all. Then how could Mary have been sinless if the source of her human flesh was stained by sin. Think about it. Don't just parrot Catholic tradition.

DougLawrence - fine ignore the Romans quote what about the other quote? The simple fact is that stating Mary was sinless directly contradicts the Bible.

I personally believe Mary was blessed but was a sinner nonetheless. What amazes me about the Bible is how LITTLE is written about Mary. I disagree with Catholics who worship her and I do believe she had normal marital relations with Joseph and thus Jesus had brothers and sisters (half anyway). I also don't believe the Pope is infallible or that you must confess your sins to a priest or that priests shouldn't marry (Peter had a wife) or in a purgatory, etc...

Mary wasn't without sin,she was only highly favored among women. Mary was a direct desendant of Rahab the prositute. The Holy Spirit overshadowed her,thus leaving her with child. It was The Immaculate conception. When a woman Is pregnant,at NO time does blood pass from mother to baby,only nutrition. Doctor's can't explain this phenomena. Mary was a sinner just like everybody else. Don't put Mary In the Godhead. She was the earthly mother of Jesus ! She was not granted a special birth of being sinless. If that were the case God wouldn't have had to send Jesus to the earth to die for the sins of Humanity.

The only logical error is yours.

You may think that God needed to do something more than he did, but then you would be wrong.

God chose one woman to be the mother of Jesus. God preserved her from any stain of sin by freeing her from the effects of original sin prior to her conception, solely for the benefit of his son Jesus, who could not have been the Messiah if either he or the source of his human flesh had ever been stained by sin in any way.

Your passage in Romans can be interpreted in at least five different ways, and only ONE would infer that both the Blessed Virgin AND Jesus had sinned.

Do you think Jesus was a sinner, too?

If you do, then you simply do not understand the peculiar theology of redemption, and all that was required for the salvation of mankind.

I would add to brother Don's answer:Then both Joseph and Mary offered a sin offering according to the law of God. (Joseph and Mary came to Jerusalem) “to offer a sacrifice according to that which is said in the law of the Lord, A pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons.” (Luke 2:24). If Mary was without sin, there would have been no need to offer up a pair of birds as a sacrifice to the Lord.

If Mary was sinless then why did she confess that she needed a Saviour?

Luk 1:47 "And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour."
