I believe that all the generations have had signs among them.

God aks us not to guess about the time He is coming back. He asks us to be ready.

Moises..End times have been here for a long time, and everything happens in God's timing. We need to be ready. And not to be fooled by false prophets.

In short, no the Watchtower Society, as you put it, does not meet the criteria of being defined as false prophets. If I may, I would like to remind you that the Watchtower Bible & Tract Society, Inc. is a legal entity – a publishing company. As such, it cannot be a prophet one way or another. If, however, you mean the Christian Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses, then the answer, still, is no, they do not meet the criteria of being false prophets. Criteria, as you no doubt are aware, is plural. It means more than one. Thus the criteria for determining a false prophet could not be restricted to one standard – or criterion - of giving prophecies that do not come true.

We take all the warnings and commands of Christ Jesus quite seriously indeed. As for false prophets, we try to keep in mind his words at the scripture you quoted. We also try to keep in mind his words at Matthew 7:21-23: "Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity. "

Interestingly enough, Jesus never denied that these professed followers performed wonderful works. He pointedly told them, however, that those works amounted to iniquity. And why was that? Because they had not done the will of his Father. They were doing what THEY thought were good deeds.

Moreover, we also take seriously all the definitions of false prophets as recorded in the Mosaic law – even as Jesus himself did. Thus, we do not dismiss Deuteronomy 13:1-5 as do most people. Here it is made quite clear that the sign or portent of a false prophet can come true. Thus, a so-called prophecy or portent which DOES come true does not mark one as a true prophet any more than a so-called prophecy or portent which DOES NOT come true marks one as a false prophet.

Yes, we take seriously the commands of Christ which includes the commission he gave to his followers. That one is so serious that it continues right on up to the time of the end - Matthew 24:14 and Acts 1:8 – preaching and teaching the good news of God's kingdom. If we are to be pleasing to Christ Jesus and to God, then their commands respecting the kingdom good news must be as important to us as it is to them.

At Matthew 24: 23-27 Jesus went on to say: "THEN if anyone says to you, 'Look! Here is the Christ,' or, 'There!' do not believe it.

"Then," in the context of Jesus' prophecy, means "then," during the tribulation—after the destruction of the anti typical holy place by the disgusting thing.

It should be obvious that the Master intended to warn his faithful ones of the dangers of being misled by false religionists during the tribulation.

Matthew 24:23,24 is actually talking about Christendom, the false Christ who "perform great signs and miracles" - and thats something a lot preachers do today with their art of so called "healing".

The 1914 was actually talked about in the Bible, but people don't bother looking into the bible prophecies fulfilled because they are not keeping "watch" on these events.

Christ presence is actually talked about in the Bible..

Matthew 24:3
3As Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately. "Tell us," they said, "when will this happen, and what will be the sign of your COMING and of the end of the age?"

parousia - the coming, arrival, advent, presence (This is why some bible translate the word coming to presence)

So the fact is, he gave us a sign of his presence, yet few recognize it.

Nina

No one is guessing his return, its all located in the Bible.

Jehovah Witnesses follow Jesus as the son of God, and their lord. See:
http://www.watchtower.org/e/jt/index.htm
The dates you are talking about are two different things. They believe 1914 is the coming of Christ. (They believe he will not come to life on earth again, yet he will and does invisibly rule in heaven.) And 1874 was never stated to be when Christ would return, there are many dates including this one discussed in their Revelation: A grand climax book. Each date means different things, and it is harmonious with today and back then.
It is interesting to note they do not claim their prophecies are fool proof. Right in the beginning of the book I stated earlier it says:
“It is not claimed these explanations are infallible, interpretation belongs to God”

Very serious

No they don't meet the criteria of false prophets.
The bible contains the true prophecies.
Decerning is not prophecying.

Progressive truth and the ability to admit error don't make false prophets.

Jer 23:27 They are thinking of making my people forget my name by means of their dreams that they keep relating each one to the other, just as their fathers forgot my name by means of Ba´al.

Baal translated into English is Lord.

Who has made people forget Jehovah's name by using "Lord"?

Pot, meet kettle!

Another question along the same lines: Why don't Christians take seriously the warning to the Jews in the Tanakh about false prophet? Doesn't Jesus meet the criteria of the false prophet, as outlined in the scripture?

See for yourself:
Deuteronomy 13:2-6 "If there should stand up in your midst a prophet or a dreamer of a dream, and he will produce to you a sign or a wonder, and the sign or the wonder comes about, of which he spoke to you, saying, "Let us follow gods of others that you did not know and we shall worship them!" - do not hearken to the words of that prophet or to that dreamer of a dream, for the L-rd, your G-d, is testing you to know whether you love the L-rd, your G-d, with all your heart and with all your soul. The L-rd, your G-d, shall you follow and Him shall you fear; His commandments shall you observe and to His voice shall you hearken; Him shall you serve and to Him shall you cleave. And that prophet and that dreamer of a dream shall be put to death, for he had spoken perversion against the L-rd, your G-d, Who takes you out of the land of Egypt, and Who redeems you from the house of slavery, to make you stray from the path on which the L-rd, your G-d, has commanded you to do; and you shall destroy the evil from your midst."

yes you are right the w.t. or the people behind the scene who write there info are in error many times and thus are false prophets there own words condemn them.but you will never know why? because if you ask for the names of the people who print the info for the w.t. so you can ask them questions, you will not get a name!!! this raises red flags with me!!i can't even challenge these people from the w.t. with the word of GOD to show there errors. warning stay away!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
