I have a 1995 VW Golf Mark 3, manual transmission, and the idle speed appears to be running very slow. When I let off the gas, with the clutch in, it runs at about 0-200 rpm (not 2000). Also, sometimes when it gets too low, it automatically revs itself bringing it up too high, then dies. This makes it die everytime I put the clutch in. Does anybody know what I can do to adjust the idle speed in my car? Thanks!

I have read that it should run at about 900 rpm. Is this a good number?

BTW... The check engine light is not on. It does go on however, when it dies, but that is normal.

Also, I have taken it into the shop for various reasons recently because there was a problem with the car jerking really bad when it accelerated. They fixed this by changing the thermometer, but the idle speed problem wasn't fixed. No reading came up on their computer, it said that everything was working fine.

Another think to add, is that it doesn't die once it warms up. Once you drive it for a good 10 minutes, it works just perfectly.

Yet another thing, it has an A.P.E Chip inside it from its previous owner, he had a racing package on it.

Try unplugging your mass air flow sensor. My 96 had similar symptoms that you describe when mine went bad. If your maf is bad it will run like it did before this problem started. You can get some cleaner for it at autozone for about $10, but it may not help. Let me know what you find out.

Mine idles at 900rpm (ish), after the secondary air injection system turns off. I am pretty sure between 850 and 950 rpm is normal and acceptable.

I believe you have an electronic control and you cannot set the idle. If it is slow you have a problem. Is your check ebgine lite on ? You may have a problem with the idle air control or ths egr valve.

that sounds about right, you should find the adjustment screw on the carburetor if you know what that is.I suggest that you get a Chilton's manual if you plan on keeping that bug it will save you lots of money in the long run.
