I recently traveled to Ireland with a group. While in a town near Galway a group of girls were attacked for no reason at all by travellers (or gypsies I heard both tems used). Is this a rare occurrence or a serious problem that happens often because very little was done about the attack after it was reported.
I will say though that this was the only negative experience the whole trip. The rest was wonderful.

yes and no. There have been many reported problems with travellers especially in the West of ireland. In county Mayo, travellers are banned from all nightclubs and bars because the damage they have caused there. Galway has a major traveller problem, parts of Tuam have become "no-go" areas. Huge fights often break out at traveller weddings and funerals, that is why many towns in the west are very wary of holding these events.
I hope this unsavoury incident didn't put you guys off coming back, things like this are very rare, personally i have never seen it myself and i have lived here for 30 years and in Galway city for 3 years.

it doesnt happen that often. If it happens again threten to do what paurig Mc Nally did and that will stop them (He shot a traveller last year). The reason nothing happened when yopu told the police is because only local cops will be able to do anything as it wasnt a very serious incident and one cop on his/her own will try and stay as far away from them as possible unless completely nessescary cos to be honest they are scared. Any it was a rare occurance and they were probably drunk. Dont let it put you off Ireland - travellers account for less than 1% of the population, if you come again you probably wont meet them again

Gypsies attack people not just in Ireland but all over Europe. Whenever I go to Europe I never carry a wallet or a watch. Police don't do anything about this because whenever they arrest gypsies, they are accused of racism and sued.
It does not happen as much in Ireland as it does in Germany, Spain and Italy where it is crazy, and I heard it is even worse in Eastern Europe and a new growing problem in the UK

That happeneded to us. We weren't exactly attacked, though. If you want to stop them, Screaming in japanese usually does the trick. For any situation really.

it's quite typical in my opinion
and quite typical that nothing much is done about it
violence and Ireland seem to go hand in hand
perhaps its the excessive drinking
