Because the only thing that I received was a Sixth Revised Edition of Christ Among Us A Modern Presentation Of The Catholic Faith For Adults by Anthony Wilhelm and nothing else? Am I in trouble to start the course off? Also my Catechist said a couple of things which confused me and shocked me particularly that he believes that the fact that priests can't get married is heresy. Also he said that Catholicism is a religion of rational thought and that the God of Nature can't contradict the God Of Reason as they are both one and the same yet he said that the Gospel of Matthew and the Gospel of Luke contradict themselves, and that he doesn't believe in the concept of a soul and that was invented by Greek Philosophers or something like that and that we as the body or something like that are the soul or at least that's what I thought I heard him say. Is he a heretic? What do I do?

I mean seriously the man has been a Catechist for that church for 36 years and I'm pretty sure they aren't gonmna take my word over his word as it will ultimately be my word versus his word.

Oh, man....you landed in a bad program!!

Get thyself to EWTN...get a Catechism of the Catholic Church, or the simpler Catechism for Adults.

Unfortunately, people like this slip through the cracks- aided by the priests ordained in the late 60's -early 80's who thought they could make things up as they saw fit.

From other posts I can see you want to be a good and faithful Catholic. You are in dangerous waters, here.

Remember, liberals will use intimidation and call you intolerant if you question them. Most RCIAs don't give tests or anything....muddle through the classes, educate yourself as best you can....and feel free to contact me if you have any quesitons....my priest says I make most Bishops look protestant, I am very faithful to the Church.

Well, priests used to be allowed to marry until the Church outlawed it for reasons of inheritance. An unmarried priest leaves everything to the Church. Married priests leave most to their families. That's why the law against priests marrying was created by the Catholic Church. For real, that's a true thing.

The gospels of Matthew and Luke DO contradict themselves. These contradictions are explained in a satisfactory way that do not negate either one, in Christian doctrine.

I've never heard the next one you cite, that he believes that the concept of a soul was invented by greek philosophers. I'm Jewish and can tell you that we have had the concept of a soul long before the greeks existed. The greeks may have added or taken away something or other about the concept of a soul, but they sure didn't invent it. I'm not sure even we, the Jews, were the first who had the concept of the soul. It's possible that the Sumerians may have had the concept before we did, I'd have to look that up and see.

Since you aren't too sure of what he actually said about the concept of the soul and where that concept came from, maybe you should ask him to repeat it, tell him you didn't understand what he said last time.

The way to know whether you received everything you were supposed to as far as learning materials would be to ask him.

After you've attended for a while, if you find that you do not agree with what is being taught, then feel free to leave and find another place that does teach what you feel at home with. You can do that. Good luck.

Your catechist, if he indeed said all of that, sounds like he's winging it quite a bit. There are excellent RCIA programs, and some that are way off the mark; you may have ended up in one of the latter. You aren't limited to just the particular parish you live in, you know. Perhaps the program at a neighboring parish is better-run and more appropriately orthodox. It's early enough that you can easily catch up. Personally, I'd change classes if possible. I don't care how long the instructor has been at this, that doesn't mean he's a good catechist.

Pipe down, Art. They get Bibles.

Like I said in my previous answer , get the catechism of the Catholic Church and Catholicism for Dummies and you will find that it is what Catholicism is all about in your search for truth. May be you need a new catechist or have one who can explain in detail what he meant and investigate his answers . This is the best I can do right now for you but I believe that these 2 books will help you a lot.

My guess is that he may have tried to challenge you to think.
There's nothing wrong with that book for starters.
You'll get a copy of the Catechism eventually.
The issue of priestly celibacy is a matter of discipline.
There are many exceptions, & it could change tomorrow.
Did he actually say 'heresy' or that it differred from the Bible?
There is nothing inconsistent in saying Matthew & Luke differ.
They made no claim to divinity for themselves.
The concept of a soul does come from Greek philosophy.
Judaism did not understand a life apart from the body.
I suspect you did not understand what he was getting at.
Hang in there, he's trying to make you think & question!

You have a great book there on the Catholic faith. I suggest you start reading it. It is a good introduction and reference to the Universal Catechism.

You have the right attitude. Ask questions whenever you want to clear something up.

Go to the Priest and just tell him that you are wondering about some of the things being taught.
