You could organize a neighborhood clean-up day with your friends! Adopt a local park or an elderly neighbor's yard to clean, rake, mow and do this as an act of kindness. If you go to a church, ask your Pastor if anyone in the congregation needs help with babysitting for an afternoon so they can do their Fall cleaning. And do not neglect your school grounds..maybe a good cleaning needs to be done around and under the grandstands. Just make your 20 hours as fun as possible and the more help..the more fun!

Babysitting is one of the best ways to do community service but now some people are considering it as not being community for some reason. You also could do yard work for a neighbor or help out at a nursing home or animal shelter like you said.

There are so many great ways to perform community service, it's no wonder you find it hard to chose an idea.

Contact the Activities Directors at local nursing homes, ask them what kinds of opportunities are available. Ideas include: *reading the newspaper to residents
*raising money or collecting supplies to decorate public areas, for the seasons-special ocassions-holidays. Donate your time to do the decorating with residents and staff.
*Work in, or plant a garden. Or donate and care for potted plants.
*"Adopt" a resident who does not have visitors-spend time with them every week.
*If you belong to any groups that perform, you could perform at nursing homes and senior centers.
*Volunteer with the Activities director-sing songs, do craft projects, watch movies, play games....on a weekly basis.

Contact your local humane society, animal shelter, pet rescue group to see what type of volunteer programs they have. Ideas:
*Walker, cuddler, groomer-take the shelter animals for walks, spend time with them, brush them.
*Pet escort-escort potential adoptive family members to view animals up for adoption.
*Organize a fundraising event for the shelter or group.

Read your local newspaper for special events and groups looking for volunteers. Many food banks are beginning food drives this time of year. Groups that work with the elderly might be looking for volunteers to help with assisting people at home with yard work, or running errands, etc. Abuse shelters are another place where seasonal decorations, clothing and personal care items are needed, and special projects are often needed.

You might want to spend time looking at the opportunities near your home posted at the volunteer match web sites I'm linking to in the source section.

clean up parks with friends, create a community service group, volunteer at library and churches, make suggestions in your school for cleanups, etc.
