45acp is better for home defense because it is slower and less likely to go thru a wall if you miss the target. The others you listed have higher velocity's and are much more likely to go thru a wall.

In my opinion and this is not based on any research or stats; Any one will work. I have had . 40 (a few years back), I own both .45 and 9mm. A lot of people use .357 and .38 special and I am working on my first revolver towards the end of the year... I know many people will not like my answer but any one will work and you can get ammo specifically for in home defense that will not go through two walls and hurt a loved one. But again this is my personal opinion.

My choices for home only are a .45 with at least a 4" barrel. Followed by a 9mm pistol. But I must add the a shotgun makes a very good weapon. The sight of a shotgun is menacing. And in the dark a shotgun being ****** makes the universal sound that all villains recognize.
In sequence here, my choices: .45, .40, 9mm, .357. In those orders. But I admit, I use a 9mm. I don't use a shotgun because it makes my pillow too lumpy. LOL

The best is what you can accurately place. As they say, it is better to hit with a .22 than to miss with a .45. Any of these are effective at personal defense, but of the 5, I would go with (and do) the .45. This round has a lot of energy, but is fat and slow, meaning it has a lower chance to over-penetrate, such as through walls, etc. The .357 is almost as good, but I would be worried about over-penetration. But as I said, the best one for you is the one you can handle the most easily. If this is solely for home defense, as opposed to concealed carry, I would consider a shotgun.

The most capable gun your are most capable of handling.
You can't win by missing fast, just like you can't win by hitting last.
I can shoot a .45 polymer gun very fast (and accurately) so I use it. My wife uses a 9mm. My brother uses a .40 and my uncle uses a .357.
I suggest you rent some guns and find out what you can handle well. Just because you can shoot a hand cannon and hit paper during slow fire practice, doesn't mean you should rely on that for self defense.

I would recommend a shotgun also.
As for a pistol load, find what works best for you by trying each of them out, since it is YOUR life in question.
The most critical thing I must suggest more important than ANY choice of weapon is TRAINING.
Take a certified course, not just in tactics but an armorer's course on the make and model you choose.
Then go to the range to train at least once a month, use the equivalent "Ball" [Full Metal Jacketed] cartridge in both
weight and velocity, so you can use your combat loads proficiently.
You MUST get your family trained as well. That is your moral and civic responsibility.
Removing the sense of "Forbidden Fruit" for children will guarantee to save lives from negligent handling, unlike what the Brady Bill supporters profess.

For your own safety and safety of your neighbors use a 12 gauge pump with 5 shot. The barrel looks like the holland tunnel and the sound of the action being cycled to load a round gives an intruder a chance to see just how fast his nikes can move.

A remote turret mounted quad M2. Twin fenced perimeter with concertina wire and mined buffer zone.Corner light towers and electrified outer fence. inner perimeter protected by motion sensors and infrared sensors.
That's your best home protection.
Failing that, get a Ruger Sp101 357 magnum.

Many replies will mention shotguns, and they're right -
but you asked specifically about handgun calibers...
Find out what you can comfortably carry and fire. Get skilled
with it at the range, and know the safety rules.
By then you'll have your answer.
