My step-daughter is scared to heck about getting her blood taken. She has never gone before. I have taken her in twice now and no luck. She freaks out as soon as they tap her arm. I mean really freaks out.!!! She is 12 for heavens sake. Is there someting like graval for her to take to relax her? Any hints? Please... she needs to have her blood done every 3 months to monitor the medication levels.

She has never had her blood drawn before. The nurse was going to use a butterfly needle. She watched another woman get hers drawn the other day. Im taking my older (15) daughter today to have her blood done. The younger sister is going to watch. Hopefully she will get hers done as well. I'll let you know.

There are different gauge needles, the butterfly ones for children could be used. I would discuss this with her doc., these are less painful. Also a good phlebotomist, some are gentler than others. She clearly has a phobia to have such a strong reaction. Did she have a bad experience, it might help to talk to a counselor.

I would discuss it with her doctor. The doctor can come up with a relaxant for her if needed.
When was the last time you had your blood drawn ? Might have her come with you when you have yours done so she can see it does not hurt. Might also have to have the doctor do it as your daughter might be scared of phlebotomists doing it. Once done right and she knows it does not hurt, you will never have any further problems with her refusing. Also is she subject to being bribed into having it done ?
