PIT BULL! Once you go pit, you never go back! Actually, pits and other strong, athletic dogs do better with experienced dog owners. For a first timer, whose parents are making you get a toy breed, i would say talk to a shelter or breeder and visit different web sights before you make a decision. A dog is a dog is a dog, and none are any easier than the other. Shih Tzus can be wonderful, or little demons, based on how you raise them, like ANY breed! Read: Cesar Milan's Cesar's way before you get a dog so that you can give your dog what he needs. And make sure you are making a lifetime commitment, not just planning to ditch the pup on your parents when it's time to go to college or get married! Dogs deserve that much. PS, cuteness SOOO matters! Good thing we all have our own ideas of cute!

A SHIH TZU IS A GOOD SMALL BREED DOG AS WELL AS A POODLE. BOTH ARE VERY SMART AND EASILY TRAINED AS WELL AS STURDY AND KID FRIENDLS. THE ONLY THING YOU HAVE TO THINK ABOUT IS GROOMING. BOTH WILL NEED REGULAR VISITS TOI THE GROOMER SO THAT ADDS AN ADDITION COST TO THE MAINTENANCE OF THE DOG.

A BOSTEN TERRIRR IS A BIT BIGGER, IT DOESNT HAVE THE GROOMING NEEDS AND IS STILL A SMART STURDY LITTLE DOG.

I WOULD STAY AWAY FROM CHIHAUHAU'S, ITALIAN GREY HOUNDS AND TINY YORKIES AS THEY ARE TOO SMALL TO BE A ROUGH AND TUMBLE KID FRIENDLY PET.

I LOVE MY 13 POUND PEKINGESE, BUT HE IS NOT A DOG I WOULD RECOMMEND FOR A 1ST TIME DOG OWNER OR SOMEONE WITH SMALL CHILDREN.

ALL DOGS ARE GOINGTO HAVE THIER OWN QUIRKS AND MEDICAL ISSUES. TAKE THAT INTO CONSIDERATION WHEN RESEARCHING THE ANIMAL. VT BILLS CAN ADD UP IF YOU CHOOSE AN OVERBRED OR POORLY BRED DOG.

CHECK OUT THE AKC WEB SITE IT CAN GIVE YOU DETAILS ON ALL KINDS OF BREEDS/ ONCE YOU FIND ONE THAT LOOK SLIKE A FIT, DO A GOOGLE SEARHC. YOUC AN FIND 1ST HAND INFO, BREEDERS AND RESCUE ORGANIZATIONS FOR THE BREED YOU ARE LOOKING FOR

OR YOU CAN LOOK AT YOUR LOCAL SHELTER FOR A SMALL DOG THAT NEEDS A GOOD HOME. THEY CAN HELP YOU FIND A DOG WITH THE TRAITS YOU ARE LOOKING FOR.

I'm a Jack Russel owner, but they are not for first time dog owners. Corgis are smart, adaptable, tough and lovable. I get every 2cnd dog from the S.P.C.A. If you look for a recovered puppy, take an experienced, objective dog person with you and don't adopt on your first visit as a pet shouldn't be an impulse purchase. Good luck !!!

Usually a small dog has a "top dog" personailty. I personally prefer bigger dogs - by the way there not evil ! :( -because the are normally more friendly, nicer, etc. I really discourage people from buying a pure-bred because I like to give the mixed-breed humane society dogs a home first. Plus mix breeds are usually very social and friendly. Please give a stray a home first!

You could get a little dachshund. They are smart and a great size. Not too tiny that you step on them, but not tall enough to get things off of the table, or knock things over with their tails. They tend to bark, but that can be addressed when they are a puppy. I have two and they are GREAT. I also have had them in the past, when my kids were little. They also have very little shedding, and are good with kids.

I have a cockapoo and he's awesome. Poodles are one of the smartest dogs. That's why they have been used in the circus sine the beginning of time. Any breed mixed with a poodle would probably be a good choice.
They also have a variety of poodle(called a teacup) that is very tiny.
Check them out here:

good luck and god bless

those are good breeds but they are mainly a one person dog. toy poodles are also cute and good learners. and they love the whole family.
