Just because theyre small doesn't mean that most little dogs aren't high maintenance they are little bundles of energy especially the terriers. Maybe a cat...

A cat. Seriously, the above people are right. If you are set on getting a dog, then I recommend rescuing a small dog from a rescue where the foster homes already know the individual dogs' personalities. The reason I say this is that otherwise you are just doing a russian roulette...dogs are extremely social and the changes of you getting one that cannot handle being alone are going to be pretty high.
But there are individual dogs that handle daytime by themselves okay. That's why you go to a rescue where they know the individual dogs' personalities. They can say "Don't adopt Bobby, he tears up the sofa when he's left alone. But Fredricka here, she is fine with being left along during the day if you leave her toys."
That is my advice.
One more thing, you said a dog that isn't high maintenance...again, you might want to rethink the dog decision. A cat is not high maintenance. But almost all dogs are. Small dogs are bred to be clingy and even more social than big dogs...that's why they were bred in the first place, to be lap dogs for rich mistresses, and always by their human's side. So you can see why small does not always equal low maintenance in this case.
I feel for you though. I love dogs and have always wanted one of my own. But I know my current lifestyle would make it miserable :(

If you can't give a dog attention then you really shouldn't have a dog. It's not fair to the dog. All dogs need intereaction with people. Otherwise they don't learn things like house-breaking and basic obedience commands. Plus you need to spend a lot of time socializing if it's a puppy.

Gee, sounds like hell. No attention, no walk, PERFECT COMBO for a dog who hates you. Try two cats. They will keep eachother company and you won't have a filthy conscience. Dogs are not trends. If you wouldn't want to be kept in ISOLATION all day, don't do it to an animal! Come one, you have to know better. There is no one particular breed that withstands torture better than any other. Oh and little dogs are same maintenanace as any other, don't let Paris Hilton fool you.
