I was just laying out the cards and reading them according to how they appeared. How important is it to actually read from a certain spread? What are some simple ways I can ground myself before a reading? Are there any tips from your own experiences that could be helpful?

Many good things have already been said, so....Well I think tarot reading is and should be a very personal thing. you will always find people who will say you SHOULD read them this way or that. It is, and always should be, what is best for you. So all I will do is say how it works for myself.

I use only one simple spread of 5 cards. The last 6 months, the present, the next 6-12 months, the next 2 -3 years and outcome. Although these CAN change, depending on the circumstance. And the cards will tell ME so as opposed to me telling the cards.

If there is a need for more cards, again the cards tell me. For the answers,by the way, I use a pendulum and ask.

From this point I READ the cards. I don't use any tarot books to guide me. The only one I use is one I created that has the meaning of colours, flowers, animals, etc. In other words, they are the meanings of different things that appear in my cards. This is the only guide I follow. So I feel the cards and read them from there.

I always start with the present, then the past and so on.

I almost never ask the quirent their question. I do them a general reading so as not to influence the cards. What ever is important in their life will come forward. I have found, more often than not, that when they ask a question, it is rarely answered because there has been more pressing issues they haven't thought of.

Never worry what comes out of your mouth, trust in yourself and allow it to flow, even if it doesn't make much sense at first. Go with your initial thoughts, don't think too much.

I thinks that's about it, except the following:

Never predict death...We have many paths we can follow and you may only see one or two when you do their reading. They may take a different path and the death be untrue. It is far better to suggest to someone to take better care of themselves etc...

Always remember, you are not god, nor a doctor

I have heard too many horror stories of so called tarot readers telling people they are going to die in so many years or some other terrible is going to happen to them and they take it to heart. the worst I heard was a woman being told she would die in 10 years. she took her life before she reached it.

Well I'll leave it there. Oh I also wash my hands before I touch my cards. I see it as a sign of respect to my cards.

Hope it helps..enjoy your cards.

I have read the tarot for 22 years now. I have used many different spreads and still use different ones for different purposes.

The way you are doing it is a good way to learn to read.
I would recommend that once you find a deck you do really well with (assuming you have not already) that you "read the book, learn the book, and forget the book". In other words, learn the basic meaning of each card (which actually IS constant from deck to deck) and then learn what the symbolism of each card means to YOU. This is actually both a lot harder than it sounds and a lot easier than most people make it out to be.

One book I recommend because it has a lot of useful information in it both about basic meanings and spreads is "Tarot for Dummies". I've owned a copy in the past and it is actually much better than you would think from the title.

As for grounding before a reading, each reader has slightly different ways of doing it -- including prayer. One way is to imagine your energy field like a willow tree, going down to the earth and up to the heavens before the branches go back to earth. The energy flows up from the roots, and through the branches before completing the circuit.

Don't let anyone tell you that this is easy OR that it is demonic. And don't be discouraged by those who say that what you are doing is fraudulent. None of those statement are true.....

I have been reading Tarot for the past 10 years and I can assure the other answers to the question that if used properly is one of the most effective divination tools, with it I fortold who would become the next president, that we would go to war 2 years before it happened, and many other things. The Tarot can be used to not only predict the future, but can be used to show the querants past and present. In coven settings the initiate is tested on the mastary of divinatory methods one of which is the Tarot, the other is runes, and the 3rd can be any of the wide range of methods known. To answer your question "spreads" are positionings that others have found to be effective for them, as you learn and grow with your Tarot you can and are urged to create your own spread. The effectiveness of the reading is not in the spread, but in the relationships between the cards that fall. Try different things and record your results, make notes on what worked and what didnt work and why you think it did not work and you can then build your own correspondence and ultimately become closer with your deck. simple ways of grounding, light some incense and meditate before reading. Hope this helps you.

I ground myself with scriptures lining my shirt, but sometimes the cards stand on end and twirl around and do a little dance, At first I was sacreed now I kind did it especially when the death card pulls out a violin and plays tThe Devil Went Dow to Georgia, that song really rocks.

Toward the end of the day I have a teay goodbye and the cards fly into their box and I hide them from Mother Superior, She's strictly a Ouija Board person.

The Tarot cards are as reliable as the Ouija board which is as reliable as throwing bird entrails into the air, and determining the future by analyzing the pattern they make when the hit the ground.

I think it's important to take all the ugly ones out of the deck first.

But I asked my neighbor (she's a psychic) and she said that you must clear your mind and concentrate on the questions you plan to ask in the reading.

I guess that sounds better than my thinking. Oh well . . . .

supposedly you sleep with them

never let others touch save during a reading

let them fall where they may, use your intuition and learn to read them upside down and use help books to understand hidden meanings

so far, my readings have been on the money for me before I began to doubt "gods" and began to discover Atheism or agnosticism

good luck with your own

First you need to take them outside to a safe place and light them on fire, let them burn to nothing. Then stand up and slap yourself in the face as hard as you can, get a bible and start reading it I suggest start reading in the Gospel of John.
