We sometimes give ourselves clues to wake up. Something in your mind keeps sending the signal to awaken, the shaking. So you do.

I remember as a child I used to see monsters or such in my dreams and I would sometimes, but not always, simply tell myself that he isn't real, that he can't really hurt me. At that point the dream became more like an amusement ride, scarey but kind of safe. The first time I saw the Matrix movie, I laughed out loud when the child played with bending the spoon and told Neo, "the spoon isn't real". Everyone looked at me like I had lost my mind, it wasn't nearly funny to them, but that was essentially how I sometimes were able to handle bad dreams, my equivalent phrasing of "the spoon isn't real".

You won't always be able to do it, but when you see the scene again, try to tell yourself that this time someone is going to give me a shake and rather than wake up, I want to turn around and see who it is. This is most possible in repetitive dreams. Sometimes our dreams are ourselves trying to solve puzzles in our lives. Your puzzle keeps hitting a restart button, like on your computer. So, when you recognize yourself going to the same place as before, try to do something different next time.

Dreams don't always have a meaning, but when analyzing this:

Fear of death
Fear of impending doom

especially since you saw dark clouds, etc.

But, dreams often don't mean anything. It could be you're holding back emotions during the day (such as fear or anger) and they come out in your dreams.
