We CAN stop it. We have not yet reached "the point of no return" where global warming has been hyper accelerated. Changes can and should be made which will prevent the rapid increase of temperature. We did it with the Ozone layer when we stopped using ozone-depleting chemicals which were in aerosol sprays. The hole in the ozone is closing. We can do the same with global warming. Go to http://www.climatecrisis.net/takeaction/ to read about SIMPLE changes you can do to make a difference.
PLEASE.

Global climate is a dynamic process, and as such, is always in a state of change. The idea that we can stop it happening, whether it is warming or cooling is a political concept and bears no relation to physical reality.
Humans have neither the theoretical knowledge nor the technical ability to put a stop to a process that is a fundamental part of how our planed works.
Using our resources carefully, recycling and cleaning up after ourselves are all good things in themselves, but they won't stop global warming.
The media give the impression that man made CO2 is the whole story, when it is only a fraction of one percent of the factors that control our climate.
For people worried about sea level, the real story is that since the '70's when this present warming cycle started the sea has risen about 7cm. During the previous 30 years, when we were in a global cooling period, the sea rose by about the same amount. On a longer time scale the sea level rise through the 20th century has been more or less constant, on a millennial timescale the see level changes are slowing down. At these rates it will take thousands of years for any of the large coastal cities to be seriously affected

Well, two things.
First, while we can't stop global warming in the short run, we can stop it in the long run by shifting to alternative energy technologies.
Nevertheless, you're right in that we are going to be stuck with it for the rest of this century. But--the sooner and faster we do switch to alternative energy technologies, the less sever global warming will be--which will make it easier to adapt.
There's little-beyond supporting sound policies and adopting a "green" lifestyle--an individual can do. NOT building homes, etc. on oceanfront property that may be underwate r in 20 years is one thing, though. And be aware of the water supply and long term climate trends where you live. For example--though this is NOT certain yet--the Southwest US may not be able to support its existing population in the future. So you might want to think about relocating in a few years, if that pproves to be the case.
Most of the abtative strategies, though , will be large scale. We willl have to make decisions about what coastal areas to protect with levees, etc. annd which to abandon as sea levels rise. And as climate changes become pronounced there's going to have to be a restructuring of the agricultural industries--different crops in some areas, for example.
And--worldwide, there are going to be a lot of refugees. Figuring out how to relocate them--without resorting to bashing each other or the refugees in the head (i.e. warfare) is going to take some serious long-term diplomatic work--and its going to have to be even-handed ad done in good faith if we don't want this whole thing to set off an era of warfare.

Global Warming is global fear unleashed by scientists.I feel that the climate in most of the countries are becoming colder.Rain falls mostly incresed. It is like Prof.Malthus predicted that due to increase in population in geometric progression and food production in arithmetic progession ,the world will end in starvation death. We do not know the new scientific discoveries that may be coming.Human beings may be more adapted to changing conditions etc.We must do as much as possible to control warming, but not afraid of it as such. The world will perish some day or other, yar, let us be happy now.

we can help fight it.
after all if you give up now, we can lose the enviorment we lived in for so long.
and if we don't fight it, millions of trees are being cut down and there are less glaciers in this world so therefore the ocean level is rising and that can flood towns and probraly even cities.and do you know that we need plants to survive? they produce part of the oxygen we need to breathe.
do you know that today landfills are getting bigger and bigger unless we don't recycle? soon there will be nowhere else in the world to put our trash in.
so it is important to fight global warming. every little thing you do to fight it makes a big difference

Just to let all of you know, global warming cannot be stopped! physically and naturally. First of all, the sun is expanding, and thus the earth will get hotter, how can we deal with this....live on mars! Secondly, our population is vast growing thus there is a demand for all sorts of resources.... we can just stop it. Thirdy, it is bound to happen because the time of the next ice age is soon approaching. Ice will melt, cuasing a disturbance in water flow ( dont know the name).....classsic example U.K. why it dosnt snow is becasue warm water is brought from the south threw these currents....adding fresh water would stop this flow and we then will experience an ice age!

Yes it looks like we have reached the point where the damage done is irreversible, what ever we have made a terrible mess of this planet..Probably best for all organisations, company's,Governments, individuals act with concern for the environment..The Rich have now realised its no good having money if you have not got anywhere to spend it..R Branson is not concerned with the fate of Londoners or anybody..What concerns him is his Islands sinking and trees falling down..So lets not learn to live in this **** but clean it up..

Global warming. did they tell Spain / turkey /and all the hot country's about the hot climate they have had for 100`s of years. we need it in Britain so we can grow our own banana's/tropical fruits less heating bills. less cloth`s to buy. rain for a month then none for the rest of the year. no winging water boards. we would save millions. bring it on.

it`s predicted, nothing can be done to change that . every prophecies that i read in 1986 are coming to reality. every one of them. and globale warming is one of them. it is predict that every island of the world will disapear, how do you think it will happen. it`s just too bad that the peoples realise only after a crisis what they have. another prediction, and i`m sure that a lot of peoples will agreed. the last generation will be rebelleous. me, i`m ready to go back to basic and i`m not scared at all.

It isn't clear to me that it can't be stopped or reversed, only that doing nothing will not stop or reverse it. It would be simpler to address if the political battle did not have to be fought first. However, everyone in the fields of reproductive science, earth science, biology, and cellular biology faces the same challenge from the Bush Administration. I don't see them giving up.
