It is really necessary, but there's a no-cook recipe you can use to make some now to use until you get it. 2 Cups of Flour, 1 Cup of Salt and 2 Tablespoons of cooking oil mixed together. Add water (mixed with food coloring if you want) a couple of tablespoons at a time, stirring after each addition. When it all holds together, pour it out on a floured board and knead it. If it is too sticky, add more flour. If it seems dry knead in water a few drops at a time. That will hold you until you can make the real stuff. Or....got to perpetualpreschool.com for lots of recipes, some of which don't need cream of tartar. There's even one made without flour , with cornstarch and baking soda, that you can make for kids who can't have wheat.

If you are doing small, delicate items you can mix white bread (remove the crust) and white glue and a drop or so of oil. Kneed, Makes a super fine clay. We used to make those little roses and small things with it.

The flour and salt, water thing is great for larger items and you can bake them to really harden and then paint up a storm.

Also, have you priced creme of tartar lately????WOW
