I work for a department store, I dislike my job and really want to leave. The problem is that I have made lots of friends there and I do like the environment, its just the job/department i work in, which I dislike.

I have an interview for a concession within the store this week, but its going to be extremely awkward for me as i'll be worrying that i'll bump into my manager, and It will probably be obvious i'm going for an interview.

I really want to pursue this, and why shouldn't I? But what can I do if my manager finds out and especially if I don't get the job and have to stay. Can he fire me for applying elsewhere?

If you're that unhappy its worth taking the risk. Do you really want to stay where you're at.

Legally he has no grounds to fire you for looking for another job... if he did we'd all be unemployed... as its rare that someone walks up and says hey wanna job? We've all job searched while being employed with someone else. He can find other grounds to fire you on, your attendence or not being up to par, low sales... whatever he can think of that has merit
Most managers within a department store are aware that not everyone wants to work in the sports department for 2 years and that its a healthy change of pace to move to something else. If this is common practice within your workplace - for people to move around from different departments - you have nothing to worry about.
Should he see you going for the interview and you dont get the job, speak with him and let him know that you are interested in learning new things, you dont feel that you have the oppertunity to do that within that department. Is there anything he can suggest... additional duties... something thats different...
This gives you a way out and also keeps you on his good side, your being honest in stating that you need more of a challenge but you are also interested in staying - your not, so fake it, it avoids alkward situations while you job hunt further for the perfect job
And yes I think you should go to the interview, you need to leave the environment your in and move on.

You work at a department store. Your boss really doesn't care if you apply somewhere else. Someone else will just take your place.

Do you think that you will be happier working at concession? You should go to college so you are not working the rest of your life at these dead end jobs.

NO he cant fire you for applying elsewhere. BUT, if he's an *** hole, he can find something else to fire you for, like look at your attendance or whether or not you wear your uniform, or how many write ups you have had, he could FIND something to hang his hat on, eventhough the real reason may be the fact that you are going for the interview.

no he will not. It is understood that an entry level employee will look for other work. Even if you don't run into him the person interviewing you will call him for a reference. So he is going to find out any way. But trust me he will be fine with it he may even offer some encouragement if you will be bettering yourself with the new job. Good Luck with your interview.

Ask the person you'll be interviewing with if they can keep this in strict confidence and meet somewhere else if you are in a Mall environment.

I've been told in the U.S. that an employer can fire you for no reason, they can say you weren't doing your job. I am in an "At will state".

Good luck, hope you get the job.

I would call the interviewer and ask if you could meet somewhere in the vicinity that meets your needs for privacy.
I wouldn't worry about losing your job, etc. Just don't talk about what you're doing with your friends at work no matter how much you trust them. That would be the lamest reason for firing someone. Either they need you or they don't. If they need you that would be shooting themselves in the foot. If they don't need you they could fire you for anything else to get rid of you. Don't worry, be happy, be cool about it and you will probably do well.

he can fire you for looking for a new job, but u have to just be confident in yourself and also be very stealthy, lol. But seriousli if this is the job u want then go for it and if u run into ur boss o well, that should make u want this new job even more

This is why I hate corporate america. What a silly thing to have to worry about every day. Dont worry about it ....be happy and follow your bliss. The universe will work out the rest.

Can you ask the manager that you are interviewing with to interview you in a nearby coffee shop? Just tell him that you don't want to be seen by your current manager.
