I like the digital rebels. Right now I use mobile phone cameras, being creative, it hurts. I use the SonyEricsson k750i now, crappy camera. I'm waiting for the SonyEricsson k850i in October. Apparently the Nokia N95 is almost as good but all Nokia camera phones have very unrealistic colour capture. Also there is a new Samsung which might be better than the k850i but I'm really not sure about the lens quality on it. That said. the only real great hing about camera phones is that provided the quality is good enough, they are great for unplanned out door shots. Especially when you don't need very high detail.

Try this idea. Get yourself a Canon SD Elph. YES, a point and shot, (I'll bear the brunt from the masses of pro-semi-pro & not so semi-pros that think I'm a moron for suggesting this). You said you are into art. Fine photography is an art and you would probably need a fine camera to make fine photographs but not necessarily fine art. I have taken quite a few pix with the Canon Elph and turned them into photo-illustration-fine art that have been printed and sold. Take this advice with a grain or two of salt, I'm really just a moron.

Canon EOS 30D - Primary
Kodak CW330 - point and shoot for that shot I don't have time to get out the "real" camera or when the Canon is to intrusive to the situation.
Minolta 7000 (not used as much since I went digital)

A Canon Rebel XT is what I use. It's only a hobby for me so I'm not prepared for the more professional cameras and their expense.
I've only used Canons over the years. They've all worked well for me.

Canon Rebel XTi (digital) for fast action shots and quick change ups
Canon Rebel Xs (film) for my black and white film shots
Pentax K1000 (30 years old, film) for my macro shots
Marvel S-20 (60 year old box camera) because it still works

I use:
Canon EOS 20D
Nikon D200
Nikon D2X
Film cameras:
Canon EOS A2
Canon EOS 3
Canon EOS Elan IIe
I definitely like Canons better for digital photography. I think they are better at white balance and flash exposure. I think the quality of Canon's lenses are more consistent. I shoot Nikons because my job pays for them. If it were up to me, I'd use only Canon.
