Me, my fiancee, and his father all have different opinons about a car crash that recently occured. I think all parties involved are responsible and should help pay to cover the costs. My fiancee says he'll pay it just to get it over with, and his dad said i'm "weird" and its my problem. A few months ago I got into a car crash with my fiancees truck and it was my fault i'm not denying that. However, my fiancees father voluntered to pay his car insurance for him and he had full coverage insurance as far as we knew so although it sucked, at least we were covered. Accidents happen thats why the world has car insurance. Well he had let his car insurance drop without telling us because he couldnt afford it. So now either me or my firancee has to pay the damages. Well if he had told us he was dropping our insurance, or needed help paying it we would have taken care of it!! But he lied to us about it instead, even months after the crash. Who should have to pay?

The registered owner and/or driver of the vehicle. Dad is off the hook--it's not his responsibility to handle someone else's bills. Suck, but it's not. Should he have told you? Yes, but that doesn't mean he owes for the damages.

The best thing you could do is contact your insurance company as secondary coverage. Provided you have full coverage and depending on your state, your insurance policy will step as secondary coverage to protect you in the event you are driving a non-owned car. Your policy acts as excess to the insurance on the car you are driving. Since that car didn't have insurance, your's should step up and cover the loss subject to your collision deductible. There could be other factors here such as if the vehicle you crashed was regularly used by you but I would certainly check into it with your insurance company.
If that doesn't work for you, I personally feel your future father-in-law must share some of the blame by not telling his son he quit paying his premiums. He's morally/ethically guilty but I'm not sure if that makes him legally liable.

Do you have your own policy that is separate from the one of your fiancee that was in force at the time of the accident? If so, call them. They may provide coverage for this loss.

Legally - the owner and driver are responsible for the damage that arises from an automobile accident.

Just because he had full coverage does not mean you were covered, sad but true, so you crash you pay, if you were not listed on his policy then you were driving without insurance...his dropping the insurance has nothing to do with it....you never had any...sorry

Your fiance is a grown man. As owner of the car HE is responsible to know if theirs coverage or not on the vehicle- no one else. Legally, he is fully responsible for damages. Yea, it sucks his dad did that but - COME ON!- what grown man whos getting married even depends on their father for car insurance? Grow up.
