Hello,

My boston terrier is now 5 months old and he is having issues with going to the bathroom in the house. My dog is in his crate during the day and at night for sometimes 7+ hours and he has no issues with holding his bladder for that long. Its very rare he has an accident in his crate. While he is out of this crate though he tends to pee sometimes of 10+ times in 8 hours or less. We take him out often and everytime he goes. He tends to have a few accidents a day in the house since he goes so often. He is a calm dog unless he gets worked up so i doubt its stress or anything. We are trying to create a routine for him so we know when he will have to go during the day but its kind of impossible when he goes so many times.... Any ideas or thoughts would greatly be appreciated. Thanks

This is what and how I would do it

go out with them... and use a potty word or words.. mine is *hurry up*
Take them out
Upon Waking
Upon Eating
Upon Drinking
Upon playing for 10-15 mins
Before bed time
Now you have your dog outside and are saying the potty word - the dog eliminates - you then rush your dog inside saying good dog - good *hurry up*... once inside they get a small treat.

Dogs are smart and soon they will be doing a *hurry up* very quickly so then can go inside for the treat... when teaching ***always**** bring them in for the reward- this way they relate only the potty for the outside... no confusion please.

When your dog has an accident in the house pick it up and take him and the poo outside... so he knows... ***exactly what you want of him***... You stick him outside with a NO and he thinks being outside is not good - it is punishment.

Dogs only think in Black and White and have no reasoning powers.

THINK hon THINK

You really need watch your dog when he's free. Catching him in the act, is one of the best ways to correct the behavior.

He's still rather young, but it's very important to either watch him at all times, or use the umbilical cord method, which is to keep him on a leash and with you at ALL times. Also, try taking him out more frequently when he's not crated. Try taking him out every hour, cutting back as he matures.

ok I am a boston freak, I LOVE THOSE LIL PUG FACES!!! get you some of those potty pads and teach him to go on those. he doesnt go in his cage cuz Bostons are well known for not laying in their "stuff" so they wont go in their cage. we just put down our last 2 babies last year and I dont know if the folks will get another cuz they are still hooked on the last 2 (Tammy and Pixie, pixie being the mother) they do demand alot of attention. but they are the best by far!!! and I have had alot of dogs in my life! (the 4 legged ones lmao) you gotta get into the habit of letting him out more often when you are home. and maybe try a treat when he comes in from outside so it shows him he is a good boy for not pottying in the house. oh and they love to have their own blankets!! lol

At the present time he regardes his crate as his home so he keeps it clean. He needs to learn that your house is also his home and that his crate is just a place for him to sleep.

Has he been checked for medical conditions such as a UTI which may be making him go so often? A dog with a UTI can be impossible to housetrain until that is cleared up.

You didn't mention if he is neutered or not.

Edit: Ok, if he's not neutered he should be! It helps a lot! That should be your first step in fixing this problem.
