Here is a lttle information regarding Wilhelms book;
Since it was first published in 1967, Anthony Wilhelm's Christ Among Us has become America's most popular guide to modern Catholicism. Perfect for both new Catholics and those returning to the faith, this classic presentation of the Catholic faith provides a thorough, up-to-date discussion of Catholic theology, traditions, and practices and traces Church teachings from Vatican II to Pope John Paul II.

The sixth revised edition of Christ Among Us has been fully updated to reflect the Church's teaching on current social issues and including excerpts from the new Catechism of the Catholic Church. Including discussion questions with modern relevance as well as suggestions for personal reflection, Christ Among Us is the ideal handbook for anyone interested in the practice of Catholism today.
It is not an official catechism though.

Okay so you feel the call to join the church. That is a blessing in many ways, perhaps the parish you have joined isn't the one that will help you grow in faith, don't throw the baby out with the bath water. Try visiting other parishes close to you. Remember all churches including the Catholic church are a mix of humanity with divinity. Poor catechists are a problem in the church, there are good ones. Is this a test of faith for you? Pray for guidance, wisdom, knowledge, and understanding (gifts of the Holy Spirit)

I think you will be alright and just because you got off to a bad start does not mean it will end up in a bad position in the end. I hope I was of some help to you in the previous question you ask in this regard.

No when it comes to joining his Church---he does not mess around with mysterious stuff. There is nothing to figure out. If you are there then you are meant to be there.
