Preparing for prayer is one of the ancient practices in the Judeo/Chrisitan/Islamic tradition. It is used in each of them to signify the person as holy, as deserving of grace from God because they prepare before asking God's blessings.

I have seen Jews put on their yarmulkes, Christians fast before Communion, and Muslims wash themselves before praying. These practices make people feel good about themselves, so I guess they have some value.

It's when a few of them go overboard and decide that they are special or better because of their practices, or that others will go to hell or be hated because they don't practice certain rituals that I find fault with it.
