Old version or alternative to adobe reader?

I want to be able to read pdf files, but I don't really trust adobe as of late. Is there an older version of adobe without all the strange encryptions and general weirdness--or better yet an alternative that can read pdfs?

Yes, I know about oldversion.com . I'm curious as to which version of adobe reader doesn't have the strange stuff going on.
