.015g x 1000mg/1g = 15 mg

since 1000 mg = 1 gram, it's liking multiplying by 1, but it lets you cancel the grams and leave the milligrams.

In the metric system all prefixes are based on powers of 10. Thus 20 mm = 2 cm = .02 m.

Try this: ?mg = 0.015 g (1000 mg/1 g) The g's cancel and the math says to multiply 0.015 * 1000 = 15.0 mg.
This is called dimensional analysis. Using it you can do ANY conversion.
