I have got to know a french girl who has recently started calling me "ma puce". I know it is an affectionate term but I always thought it was something that you called your boyfriend/girlfriend husband/wife etc, not a friend? My french is ok, but not native level, so if a native french speaker could tell me what this means exactly it would be great. She is good friends with my boyfriend so I cant ask him as he will get worried. I am also starting to get worried....thanks for your help.

It's a term of endearment, like the British "my pet." It can be used with significant others, but it can be used in a nonsexual way as well among close friends or with children. By calling you "ma puce" your friend is just expressing her fondness for you, so just be flattered. She probably considers you a very good friend (think of it as an equivalent of "my BFF"). Unless there are other indications that suggest otherwise, your friend is not making a pass at you.

@ moreno : so French people are weird ?.... do you think it's not weird to call people : honey, .......????....

So, Puce means : flea. But it's a affectionate way to call children, especially a girl . I call my best friend in France : ma puce...meaning she's sweet, nice to me and I really likes her.

ma puce = honey, sweetheart, love

in fact it applies also to true friends, not only to a girl who is called so by her boyfriend/lover. you can also use it for a little girl (child's age) in an affectionate kind of way...

Unfortunately, it does literally mean "my flea", but my husband's grandmother calls our kids that so it's not just for boyfriends.
