and some Muslims, the Kufa, refused the version he picked? I've read this in a few different sources so far like:
"Islam" by A. Guillaume
"Understanding Muhammad and the Koran...Islam for the Western Mind" by Richard Henry Drummond.
"ibn Abbas asked Uthman what possessed him to place Surat al Anfal, one of the mathani, with Bara'a, one of the mi'in, join them with no bismillah between them; and place them among the seven lengthy Suras. Uthman replied that often the Prophet received quite long revelations. He would call for one of the scribes and say, 'Put these verses in the Sura in which so-and-so occurs.' Anfal was among the first of the Medina revelations and Bara'a among the last. Since its contents resembled those of Anfal, Uthman took it to belong with it, for the Prophet had died without explaining that it was part of it". ("al Itqan" by Jalal al Din).
Doesn't sound protected and it seems others should be credited in addition to Muhammad.
Thanks.

Isn't it true that the copy in Tashkent, Uzbekistan uses the Kufic script, which most scholars believe wasn't used until the 8th century and only about 1/3 of the original copy is there?

Muslims claim the copy in the Topkapi Museum in Istanbul dates from around 650 A.D, but it is also written in Kufic script. Coins in the British Museum show that the first coins using the Kufic script date from the mid to end of the 8th century. The only script used during and after Muhammad's days was the Jazm script. The oldest copy is in the British Library, dated around 160 years after Muhammad's death!

Ahmad Love - If reporting sources that tell a different story is humiliating Islam, then I guess I'm guilty. I thought I was searching for the truth, questioning and seeking, something you apparently have never done. You should change your name because Love is not showing from you at all! How dare you sic Allah on me?! Grow up.

The Koran has in fact been botched many times. One of Muhammad's entire "revelations" was eaten by a goat before it could even be compiled, and aside from that there are the "Satanic verses" that Muhammad wrote and later discarded because even his followers sensed they were demonic. Muslims don't like to talk about that incident much.

yes God Allah keeps it.
edit:
1*The Qur'an was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) via the angel Gabriel, and the Prophet subsequently memorized the whole scripture
2*Thousands of the Companions of the Prophet learned the Qur'an directly from the Prophet (pbuh). They memorized it and were known in Islamic history as huffaadh (the memorizers and preservers of the Qur'an).
3*Moreover, a number of Companions wrote it down during the lifetime of the Prophet (peace be upon him), and it was compiled in its entirety immediately after his death.
4*The entire Qur’an was written down during the lifetime of the Prophet Muhammad, and trusting the fact that many scholars knew it by heart, it was not collected in one volume. IT WAS PERSONALLY ARRANGER BY HIM and the Muslims memorized it in the same order.
............................................................
5*moreover,During the rule of the first Caliph Abu Bakr, there was a rebellion among some distant Arab tribes that resulted in a series of fierce battles. In one particular battle, a number Companions who had memorized the Qur’an were killed. The Companion Omar worried that the knowledge of the Qur’an was in danger, thus he convinced Abu Bakr that the Qur’an should be compiled into book form as a means of preserving it once and for all.
6*Zayd bin Thabit was entrusted with this important task. Zayd followed strict methods in his compilation and had dozens of other huffaadh recheck his work to ensure its accuracy. Abu Bakr, who had also committed the entire Qur’an to memory, approved of the final product. After Abu Bakr passed away, the copy was passed to the Caliph ‘Omar, and then Uthman.
7*However as the Muslim world expanded into lands where the people spoke Arabic as a second language, the new Muslims had a difficult time learning the correct pronunciation of the text. The Caliph Uthman consulted other Companions, and they agreed that official copies of the Qur’an should be inscribed using only the pronunciation of the Quraysh tribe, the Arabic dialect that the Prophet spoke.
8*Zayd bin Thabit was again given this assignment, and three other huffaadh were assigned to help him in the task. Together, the four scribes borrowed the original, complete copy of the Qur’an, duplicated it manually many times over, and then distributed them to all of the major Muslim cities within the empire. Two of these copies still exist today: one is in Istanbul and the other in Tashkent.
*Unlike the Bible and Old Testament that have been subject to innumerable translations, doubtful and spurious transmissions, and corruptions at the hands of clerics up till now , the Qur'an was transmitted to us in an unprecedented and unique manner according to rigorous rules of transmission.
Allah has said in the Qur’an that He alone will protect His book, and indeed He has kept His promise. The Qur’an that we read today contains the same exact words that were revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) over 1400 years ago.

Excuse me.
Uthman (ra) burned the copies of the original Verses of the Qur'an after he copied them to a single binded book. He feared that the Muslims would fight over the authencity of their own reading if there were different Qur'an.
That is why till today, the Qur'an is the same as it was to the time of Uthman, who did not change a word from the original revelation received by the Prophet (saw).
So, it is still intact, never changed and that is the proof that Allah S.W.T protects His Book.
If you are trying to discredit Islam (which I am certain you are), may Allah S.W.T show you what happens to people who humiliate Islam.
I've had enough from the people here from the start.
May Allah S.W.T guide us all.

We have copies of the Quran dating back to the time of the Prophet and they're the exact same as the ones we have now. What you just described is the arrangment of the Suras in the Quran, it doesn't mean any part of it is missing!! This is when the Quran was compiled into one book to make it easier to read.
This page explains in Great detail how the Quran HAS infact been kept unchanged, and it also refutes all the false claims trying to prove otherwise :

The Quran was memorized in totality during the lifetime of the Prophet.
It was recited back to him by hundreds of companions to insure its perfect accuracy and was transferred to hundreds more through memorization.
Even to this day there are Millions of Muslims who memorize the entire Quran from cover to cover.
God protected the Quran because this revelation was first written on the hearts of men and then on paper.
When Islam was spreading faster than the teachers could............. the Quran was put into book form for the new areas coming into Islam.
Millions of Unitarian Christians embraced Islam and supported the Muslims against all the forces of Constantine, the Trinitarian.

Non-Muslims keep raising questions about Quran out of jealousy that the authencitiy of Bible is questioned by their own scholars whereas no such controvercies exists about Quran.
There are different dialects of Arabian language spoken in western, eastern, central and southern provinces with some variation. Memorization of Quran was all exactly same but when they wrote Quran in different areas, they wrote it in their respective area dialect and spelled it as they pronounce words in their dialect.
3rd Caliph Othman b. Affan realized that this would cause problems in future specially when Quran will be sent in non-Arab countries. So he himself wrote the entire Quran with his own hands in the dialect that Prophet Mohammad spoke in province of Hijaz that include Mecca, Madina, Jeddah and surrounding cities in west coast of Arabian peninsula. Then he appointed scribes to make hundreds of copies of the Quran he wrote and distributed in all provinces. He got all Qurans people had written in different dialects brought to him and destroyed.
There were no RIVAL Qurans as you put it. His only motive was to avoid confusion by making sure that all Muslims in entire world have exactly same Quran word to word written in same dialect of Arabic language that Prophet Mohammad spoke and dictated to his companions to write in Mecca and Madina as it was being revealed day to day.
Allah(God) may have inspired Caliph Othman to do this job to preserve Quran.
Following are the Ayahs related to Quran:
XV-9 (Surah Hijr-9)
We have, without doubt,
Sent down the Message;
And we will assuredly Guarfd it (from corruption)
XLi-42. "No falsehood can approach it
From before or behind it,
It is sent down By one full of wisdom
Worthy of all praise.

The glorious prophet couldn't remember his own revelations either. He would misquote verses and then say "That which we have discarded, we have replaced with something better."
So much for the Quran's being pristine and unchanged.
