Mt. Haleakala. It's a fantastic trip. You can take a bus up to the top, then bike ride down. You go through 4 or 5 different climate zones. At the top the temperature can easily be 40 to 50 degrees cooler. It looks like the moon up there. If you want to see more stars than you have ever seen, go at night .. BUT GO!!!

Maui is actually made up of two shield volcanoes and many cinder cones, which in Hawaii are small, conical volcanoes on the surface of big, spread out ones. The dormant shield volcano of Maui is one of the largest, with a summit over 10,000 feet above sea level. Tourists often coast the 38 miles from the summit to the shore area on bicycles.

Actually, only the summit area was traditionally called Hale-a-ka-la, which means "House of the Sun". The reference is to a legend in which the demigod Maui climbs to Haleakala so he can lasso the sun and slow it down. His mother and sister had a difficult time getting their kapa or barkcloth to dry, so he was helping them out. Actually, the sun does rise slightly earlier and set slightly later, as seen from Haleakala, than it does down at sea level.

There is no traditional name that applies to the whole mountain, which comprises more than half the island. Scientists refer to it as the East Maui Volcano. Sometimes they refer to the West Maui Mountains as the West Maui Volcano as well. While the West Maui Volcano is extinct, the East Maui Volcano is dormant. Scientists believe it has erupted about ten times in the last thousand years, but it has not erupted recently.
