About 1965 I was working towards the DOE Award. We were doing the outdoor work and spent the night camping near Kinder Scout in Derbyshire. During the night it snowed. We set off in the morning to our first checkpoint and en route my mate fell down a rabbit hole and sprained his ankle. We reached the first checkpoint and reported the injury, but my mate said he would carry on. As we travelled down the Snake Pass the ankle got worse, and when we reached the Snake Cafe the woman suggested that we call it a day and get him to medical attention.
We left our contact details and the names of the organisers of the trek and waited for the bus to take us to civilisation and medical help.
Whilst waiting for the bus the rest of our party saw us and we told them what was happening and to tell the organisers, got on the bus and thought no more of it until Monday when we went into work.
The rest of the guys had decided to pack in , due to the weather and not told anyone, and you`ve guessed it, when nobody arrived at the next checkpoint the orgabnisers called out the mountain rescue, police , the lot.
Our explanation was proved, after speaking to all the people involved, but the rest of the trek sure got an ear chewing from the authorities.
