I'm new to Yahoo answers, today. I've been reading some posts in different catagories. Is evolution considered a religion? I thought evolution was a scientific theory and should be in the science catagory. Also, is Atheism a religion? Is it just a bad day or is there always this much animosity on here? Who decides where questions post?

Well, welcome to Answers. We here in the R&S category can be pretty scathing sometimes (both theists and non-theists) so watch out. Personally (and I think the vast majority of the scientific community--you know, the one who brought you plastic and television--agree with me) I find it silly to consider evolution a religion.

Religion is belief based not on evidence but on faith. Evolution is a scientific theory with much, much scientific evidence to back it up.

Atheism is sort of strange--I guess it's sort of like coal being considered a mineral, even though it's organic. Since atheists don't belief in a god, it really doesn't fit as a religion, but many people choose to classify it as such anyway. I guess that call is more subjective.

You choose where a question posts (and some questions could easily fit under more than one category) but if you post in what is clearly the wrong category you're probably going to get a lot of answers remarking on that.

A definition of religion has proved quite difficult to ascertain throughout the modern period. Early anthropolgists like Durkheim and Eliade tried to offer some insight, but a stable definition still proves elusive. Tillich related it to "ultimate concern" and in relation to this particular insight a kind of dogmatic scientism or dogmatic atheism could be considered a form of religion. The level of animosity on the Religion and Spirituality board of Yahoo Answers is a thing to behold-- both fascinating and frightening. Many of the questions seem to be asked as a provocation, rather than as an occassion for serious inquiry.

Evolution is a scientific theory as well as a fact.
Atheism is disbelief in god(s). It's a lack of religion.
And this isn't a bad day, it's always like this. You get used to it. I've only been on R&S for two weeks, and I already know what to expect. The name-calling and bigotry is surprising at first, though. The questioner decides where to post the questions.

The questioner decides

And Chimp evolution along with Atheism are religions. They require a leap of faith to believe in them.

You can't test evolution with Litmus paper, you know.

String Theory is in Mythology and Fantasy

Invisible one dimensional strings that make up everything.

Sounds like re-working of the Aether theory to me!

Pluto orbits the sun, has mass, exerts gravity, can be math predicted without seeing it, but it's NOT a planet!

You can't do that with Cereus

Cerecus can't be predicted by Math alone

It has to be observed

Clyde found Pluto by math

But, you see, Pluto is in the Science Fiction section under FORMER PLANET

Atheism must be accepted by faith because the absence of a Creator can not be proven. Evolution must also be accepted by faith because there is absolutely no scientific evidence to support it and no one was around when the universe began. Evolution is also a tenet of the religion of Humanism.

No. Evolution is not a religion, its a science. But some of the childish religious people are trying to claim its a religion, mostly for two reasons.

Reason one is that they're uneducated enough they actually think that a little boat can hold two of every animal on the planet, and all their food, with 8 people to care for them for 40 days and nights actually happened.

Reason two is that they're trying to aggravate the Atheists by claiming something they know isn't true.

That woman thinks scientologists worship science? How dumb can you get.

If you have a love of science you'll know that science rejects arguments from authority, don't worship anything!

Evolution isn't a religion but people schooled in evolutionary biology come to these rooms to provide a counterpoint to ignorant creationists who claim that the world is 6000 years old.

Atheism is no more a religion than baldness is a hair colour. You dont need a word to make people know you don't believe in fairies, do you? An atheist just rejects a set of beliefs as spurious. He doesn't offer something else in its place other than reason and logic.

It depends upon your definition of the word religion. In general it consists of: belief in supernatural being/s; distinction between sacred and profane objects; ritual acts focused on sacred objects; a moral code sanctioned by the god/s; prayer or other forms of communication with the god/s; a world view of the place of the individual therein. and how the individual fits into it; a social group bound together by the above.
