For the Army right now, we could pay for his classes and GED test if he wanted to join the Army. Depending how he does on the ASVAB, he would be able to join and the local Army recruiters will assist him in getting his GED.

The military will accept GEDs, but it is on rare occasions. I am wanting to join the military and I am also getting my GED. If your son gets in with only his GED, his job options will be limited.

To the military, if you have your GED and you also have 15 college credits, they consider your GED to be the same as a High School Diploma. This is the route I am going. Find a community college and just try to get in 15 semester credit hours taking core classes and then join.

I was told that the Army takes more GED recipients than the other branches. I do believe that the Marines are harder to get into with only a GED.

Most branches will only take new recruits if they have a high school diploma. They DO allow a small number of recruits from each recruiting district to join with a GED. Now that some of the normal things that would prevent someone from enlisting have been lifted, I've been told they are taking more recruits with the GED than they did before. It requires a waiver.. and they're giving more of those for GED's than they did before.

without a GED NO Branch will take him. With a GED, he is pretty much limited to the Army or Marines, and even then, he will have to score higher on the ASVAB( 50 instead of 31 or 35) and his job opportunities will be much more limited.

or, he can take one semester's worth of 100 level college courses at his local community college and turn that GED into the equivalent of a HS diploma in the eyes of the military, sweeping away all other limitations associated with the GED.

The minimum requirement is a GED. But the Army recruiters are headed in a new direction as far as education. Today the Army is helping future recruits to obtain their GED. Dont count on the air force or navy. Not sure about the marine corps doing the same thing as the army recruiters.

The Army phased out the GED program. You have to have at least a GED to join any branch of the military.

Get your son a GED book and make him study for it!!! Make him get his GED and talk to a recruiter!

Much luck to him if he joins!

He may not get in with a GED. Send him to a program to complete his High School diploma.
A GED is not the same as a High School diploma for accession.

You need atleast a GED and that can be hard enough with just that. Especially the Marines they are picky! But a GED is good enough if they are desperate for people to enlist obviously. And if you do well on the ASVABS.

He can join with a GED, but it can be more competitive since many kids today have college. He might want to go to a community college and get some credit under his belt.
