If it had consequences affecting my job or professional reputation, I would initiate administrative action; arrange a meeting with myself the other person and ask the supervisor/s to be present. I would then very factually state what happened and that I expect it will not happen again. Stop it there, DO NOT say what you will do with a recurrence, the element of surprise is effective, should it recur and become a serious issue requiring a legal remedy. If it is minor, very calmly tell the person you are aware of what they did...no further discussion, let them squirm... in the meantime, work your *** off! Make them look like the fool they are...been there did that.

Well if it was a friend and they backstabbed me I'd think to myself they can't be much of a friend, and I wouldn't have any problem 'losing' them as one.

They would unfortunately get nothing but the proverbial cold shoulder and I would only speak to them if I had to.

If what they had said/done had damaged my reputation somewhat I'd do as much as I could to rebuild it without going over the top i.e. no revenge attacks, just put the record straight as and when the opportunity arose.

Sooner ot later 'the truth will out'. It always does.

Your real friends will stand by you no matter what.

It really depends on what they did to you and the extent of it. But, depending on what they did to you, no matter what, always take the higher road and don't stoop to their level. There usually is a way to let the person know that you didn't appreciate what they did, without jeopardizing your self-dignity. Just make sure that whatever you decide to do, that you're able to walk around your workplace with your head held high. Even silence can be a powerful tool, depending on the circumstances of course.

One did once, I ignored him and over about three months he started bullying tactics in front of workmates making me feel small. One evening when by the tea machine he and I were alone, nobody else around. He made a sarcastic comment so I hit him and his tea flew across the floor. He never bothered me again and his mates could not understand why he ceased from mouthing at me. He kept it quiet and so did I. The bullying stopped dead.

It would depend on what they said. If it was a complete lie I wouldnt be long about letting people know it was. If it was something i did and they were after drawing attention to it, i would just take it as a lesson to be learnt and not trust their "friendship" again.

Depends how serious the issue is with those concerned...either that or have very little to do with them anymore and just exchange words if you HAVE to on a day2day basis.

Confront them - in front of everyone else in the office. People like that are usually cowards and they'll probably be mortified. They also won't do it again!

well i would have to prove it first.. once i had proof i would tell them i knew they had done it.

I would leave it for some time make people think i wasnt bothered and that i was better than them to over come this.

Then one day i would put something like laxatives in their drink...fantastic!!
