Oil companies won't make money if we all started to by them.
More research needs to go into ways to make them more affordable and practical.
That is why we won't use them more often.

They can be good for the environment or bad. Depending, depending on how the electricity was made, how the batteries are handled at the end of their life.
Range and price is why we don’t use them more often. Right now most electric car have only about a 100 mile range (about the same as we got in the early 1900’s), while a gas powered car have of all intents and purposes an unlimited range. It only takes a few minuets for fill a gas tank, while it can take hours to recharge the batteries.
Electric cars also have other problems, the 100 mile range goes down a lot when the weather get very cold, so instead of 100 miles you might get 50 or less depending on how you plan on heating the car. And air-conditioning is not counted in the range, nor is night driving or rain (windshield wipers). A radio, except for the stupid high power ones, don’t draw a lot of power so that really wouldn’t effect the range.
If there was a really cheap electric car, under say $4,000 then you’d see a lot more electric car. A 100 mile range is more then adequate for most people, so if people had two cars, one for driving close to home and another for longer trips it would work now. Or own one and rent a car for longer trips it would work.
But if you want a successful electric car you really need about a 400 mile range at -20 below 0, with the lights on, with the air-conditioning or heat on, in the rain, while listening to the radio.
Once you do that give me a call, I'll buy one.

We don't use electric cars often because there aren't many good models available at this point. That's because the battery technology hasn't become sufficiently advanced to make EVs practical, but it's almost there.
In 2009 there are going to be some very good electric cars coming out:

Once these cars are released, I think you'll start to see electric vehicles on the road much more often. It's just a matter of time.

They are Super!
But we live in the real world. The powers that be, (oil companies) would stand to lose way more than they are willing. Exxon made this clear to the Bush administration, when they were asked to lower the pump prices for the economy, and Exxon said, "Forget it. We can charge what we want and the government can't tell us what to charge for the product rendered".
Until electric cars become more affordable for the normal household, then I don't see them catching on anytime soon.

I think the cars are so awesome... and some of them can go pretty fast, even faster than my truck goes... which is cool...
The only downfall to it, is that your electricity bill will be much higher, even more than what your gas bill is... because right now, they arent as efficient... but given a few years, and a few billion dollars, it could be perfected...
and the other downfall is that they cant haul big loads, like a truck can, because they dont have enough umph like a internal combustion engine does...
but other than that, i think that the options should be thought about for the future...

Actually, the electric bill will be far less cexpensive then the gas to an ordinary car.
The Tesla has a fuel cost of less then 2c/mile.
Based on the average fuel consumption of American cars, which is 27.5 miles per gallon, and the price per gallon, which is 2.23$/gallon, it costs 8.11c to drive an ordinary car 1 mile making the cost of the Tesla to less then 1/4th the fuel cost of ordinary cars.

I heard some really good things about them.
I also heard that one of the owners found his recalled electric car in a junk lot.

& what people forget about electric cars is you have to RECHARGE the batteries. So in other words plug the charger into a electric outlet & watch your electric bill go even higher.

You will need thousands of additional power plant to generate electricity. What are you going to burn in those plants to make the electricity?
