Gods will be done does not always mean that it is happening. We pray first because it is a commandment of God that we pray for one another. We pray for guidance and direction in our lives. We pray that God will keep us on the straight and narrow path so that His will be done. Pray is our way to talk to God and God to speak to us. If we are not communicating with God then how do you know His will is being done.

Prayer has 2 points:
1. Commune with God, talk to Him and tell him your needs.
2. Intervene for others and ask Him to change His will or work something else. The Bible has many examples of people intervening with God to change His will. And, there are many examples where God did not change His will. God is love - and He does listen to our requests and taken them into account.

If God's will be done, prayer is a pointless appeal to someone who's already made up their mind.
If God is imaginary, prayer is nothing but an irrational superstition.
Theist or Atheist, I don't think prayer makes much sense.

Asking God to carry out His will on earth is an example of prayer, an invitation if you like. God won't intervene without being invited to.

Excellent question. The purpose of prayer is to align YOUR will with God's.

Probably to make yourself feel better, like you somehow have control over situations/things you can't control . . . by praying to a deity of some sort. Maybe it's a way to connect with your higher self?

Sometimes we are praying for resignation to God's will. In fact, I'm having to do that today.

God is not a dictator. He gives us free will. You choose to believe or not to believe. He won't strike you down if you choose not to. His will be done in YOUR life IF you want it to.
