Lactose is a disaccharide found in dairy products that cause the condition known as "lactose intolerance". Lactose intolerance results from a missing enzyme in the small bowel. Since the body can not degrade and consume this sugar it is consumed by the usual bacteria in the colon. This condition is common in Mediterranean individuals and can lead to complaints including abdominal discomfort, flatulence and diarrhea. This can easily be treated with avoidance of lactose in the diet. Those who enjoy dairy products can purchased lactase, an enzyme that can be easily purchased and added to food or taken as a supplement.

Unfortunately, any diarrheal illness can lead to a short term loss of this enzyme from the small bowel and induce a temporary lactose intolerance in individuals. For this reason, when people have diarrhea, physicians recommend avoiding dairy products until the diarrhea has resolved.
