Without any doubt whatsoever, I'm going to recommend two of the greatest books:

The Art of Raising a Puppy by the Monks of New Skete
and
The Koehler Method of Dog Training by William R. Koehler

Puppies under six months will really benefit from the Monks book. Older than six months is time for a more formal approach to obedience training; and the Koehler book is the best ever written. Actually, you will find several books written by Koehler and they are all fantastic. Start with the one above, it deals with Novice training.

Follow the advice in both books and you will have a GREAT companion for life. You could not give your puppy a better start. Good luck.

There's a couple of excellent books out there - The Loved Dog by Tamar Geller is excellent for first time dog owners. If you want a book that's a little more in-depth, including more advanced training, try Purely Positive Training by Sheila Booth.

Puppies for dummies is pretty good. It gives you a bunch of information on training and what to buy and all of that stuff.
