If power, water, transportation, food, and communication were all free, there would be a Renaissance of culture and education.
We would see new respect for liberty and the end of war.
When all the world's problems are solved, we could permanently dissolve dysfunctional mythologies such as religion. We could also get rid of politicians and put their kind to work making baskets, taking out garbage or something useful.
I'm afraid we'd still have to tolerate accountants, though, I'm not exactly sure why. Maybe because the lawyers won't die.

It would be absolute chaos. Things would loose their value, like houses, clothes, cars, holidays, etc. People would forget the value of money. There wouldnt even be a need for any banks, and they would shut down as there is no business. People would become more and more greedy and selfish as time goes on, wanted even more free stuff and hoarding it for themnselves. Other people will go hungry and have nothing.
However, if things were free like food, then i think some of the poorer countries might do a bit better. Young single parent families might also be better off. They could have free money, a feee house, free clothes, free food, free car. You name it.

Actually it would be pretty cool! of course we would all have to work together! People would still need to make and manufacture everything we have now! Workers could work a certain length of time, say 2 years and, train replacements, and then sit back and enjoy the fruits of their labors!
Farmers would still grow food, and get it to the grocers, ect!
And it would work! I read a book once, using this premise, and it did work!
If everyone did their part and worked together, for the service of others, it absolutely would work!
Everyone needs clothes, food, shelter! If we all worked together, there would be no homelessness, there would be no hunger! We all would have the basic things that every human being needs!
Of course, the one flaw with this idea, is that basically people are too selfish! it would involve co-operation, and that;s toomuch work!
( pardon the pun)!

This is about Money.
Paper and Coin Money and other forms of valuable goods provide us with something we need for civilization as we know it.
Why?
Well, without money the only way we can judge someones worth or value is through our memories. "Fred mowed my lawn, brought in my garbage can, he chased off those crooks, and he painted my fence." Those things we can value and in turn reward by doing similar things. Fred can not expect a total strange to know he did these things for us. He can't exchange these 'deeds' for anything from anyone else not related.
Now with money, we can reward Fred for these services. And we can owe Fred a great debt beyond money for his chasing off the crooks. Fred can now exchange the money to a total stranger for such things as Paint to paint another fence, gasoline so he can mow another lawn, or food.
Without money, what we do and what we are worth isn't easily transferable to strangers or people outside our community.
If everything were free, no deed would be worth while in doing. We would probably adopt an "Everyone for themselves" attitude instead of a Teamwork model.

Some people might just take what they need, but others would horde everything they could get their hands on, which forces everyone else to horde because they would know the supply was drying up. It would be ugly. People would also stop working. Farmers might continue, because growing your own food might be the only way of having a steady supply of food, but no one is going to make luxury items, because you can't survive on diamond necklaces or Xboxes.

The world would just become completely stagnated. If everything was free, there'd be no need to work, so nothing would be being produced to get for free.

There would soon be nothing to consume or use.
Manufacturing would halt, schools would shut down, no malls, stores, churches, places of business, no doctors, dentists....nothing.
For a good look at the consequences of that kind of freedom.....see Ethiopia, Rhodesia and several other nations in that area where no one works, no one has anything and if you want something, you must find and make it yourself.

The question is meaningless....everything costs something even if it is only the effort of picking it up. Anything that is free to you has been paid for by someone else.
All that is truly free is the grace of God.

There would be no incentive to work. They tried that at the beginning of the Russian Revolution. A lot of people starved to death before they got things back under control.
People are intrinsically lazy.
