... what in your experience were the most effective ways to learn and master a second language?

I've tried taking classes and buying books but I lose interest quickly in those. I think you have to find an aspect of the culture you really like and build on it. I personally found the music of other cultures to be really interesting. After listening to it for a while and sort of remembering the words. Look up the translations. And keep listening to different music or whatever from that culture, and it'll build naturally. You'll actually want to know the translation and figure out what you're singing.

I went to the library in the children's section and picked out a picture dictionary with all the different words and phrases. It helped me a lot, although the language was kinda broken, I was able to get my point understood.

just learn the basics from a book and hang around people who speak english and spanish. tell them to speak spanish or whatever language
