I think this says a lot about the masses of people who are susceptible to religious "tendencies"

I think religious folks are afraid. religion uses fear to control, they are afraid to die, and frightened to think about any other possibility than heaven.

Its not that they are unable to think, but are afraid to think of an other concept than the one they have subscribed too.

I don't think much of that quote... seems kind of offensive. The majority of my friends believe in something-or-other and are still brilliant... smarter than me some of them.
Religion has nothing to do with intelligence.

... well okay it has something to do with intelligence when people start pushing down on people that believe something different...judge them, try to oppress them... then it demonstrates a negative IQ.

I don't think it's always a matter of not wanting to think... I've known absolutely brilliant theists.

I think it's more often a matter of fear... fearing both the religion and the alternative... the reality of our existence is a scary thing.

Overstatement, but important. For most religious thinkers, it is about poor standards of evidence (like scripture taken at face value) and poor reasoning (count how many fallacies you see in religious questions).

That goes both ways I'm afraid, there is so much evidence that Christianity is the truth, but who wants to hear it if they are happy with their own beliefs?

Does this explain why so many top scientists are believers. 0r is it easier to criticise than to acknowledge that rational thinkers may not all agree with your dogma?
